The Redshirts of Doctor Who get it again, courtesy of the "gel guards" of "The Three Doctors".

I feel as if UNIT doesn't get as mch love now a days as it used to. Then again that's just me possibly.

The classic era UNIT was certainly (it seemed) a more hapless bunch of heroes, but certainly more personable and sympathetic than their modern counterpart.

This is true, the classic UNIT were under-gunned stumblebums who really needed the Doctor's help. But they were true-blue Defenders of the Earth. The more recent version has the real tech upgrade, doesn;t need to lean on the Doctor quite as much, but frequently comes across as heartless, cynical, and amoral.

The highlights are indeed the Doctors interacting with each other
and Omega. Hard not to feel at least a bit bad for the guy.

For me, Patrick Troughton makes this serial :)
I like Omega in this story; he's both a powerful villain, and a pitiful character. He was served worse, I think, in "Arc of Infinity."

Oh yeah. Omega is tough to not feel sorry for despite what he's been doing.
How exactly was he served worse in "Arc of Infinity"?

Well, he transfers to Amsterdam on Earth, puts on the fifth Doctors face, runs frantically through the city, and starts to melt until the doctor catches up with him and blasts him back into the antimatter universe. A pretty ignoble turn of events compared to who he was in "The Three Doctors."

those antimatter gel guards were both cool and silly, glad they didn't annihilate everything upon contact with normal matter!.

If, on the other hand, you want The Enemy to go out in a blaze of glory then stick close to the Brig - he's won all the right fights and somehow managed to walk away from most of them afterwards!

The UNIT troops do share those unfortunate traits with Trek redshirts; heroic and disposable. ;) (Wink) The gel guards and the UNIT guys midst termination are great! Clap

Yes, these gells look like something kids would put together, but the cheap costuming and special effects of early Doctor Who episodes are part of their charm. Wink/Razz
