How the mighty have fallen

January brought new challenges, new foals were born, new horses were arriving which left the staff rushed off their feet  as the prep for the 2017 racing season began. Dimitri had been running a group of the newer horses on the dirt over the last few weeks, getting them used to running in a group and the sights and smells of the main track. His plan involved running the steadiest most experienced horses from the yard alongside the green two year olds to building their confidence and experience and it seemed to be working.

It was your average mid winter day nothing out of the ordinary the bad weather over the last two days had left the turf track sodden and unrideable the dirt track on the other hand wasn’t in the worst by any means, sloppy in places but overall not too bad. Lord Hargrave decided to journey down to the track with his visitor Castelliano Medici. “I know you are looking to talk to Dimitry he’s working some horses down on the track today I figured you might like to take the opportunity to see  some of the training we’re doing with some of the green horses, I was talking to Dimitri the other day about them and i really have been meaning to get down here and check the progress for myself” Rupert said “I’ve been putting it off but here we are now” he continued with a smile “Which horses are out there training?” Castel replied curiously. Rupert passed the binoculars to Castel “ The grey with the blood markings is blackbeard, the dapple is Absolut, the chestnut is snapdragon and the seal bay with the irregular socks and gulastra is Blaklion. The two year olds are Errigal the pale buckskin, Oblivion the bay, Firebird the dark horse with orange tail and the black one who is acting up is Landshark” He replied “How’d you know Landshark would be acting up i can barely see them through the binoculars” Castle laughed sensing that that horse was a bit of a handful.

The boys filtered into the gates as the clouds overhead burst with a heavy downpour Landshark and Oblivion seemed to be having a shouting match between one another as their jockeys readied themselves for the bell. Lord Hargrave and Mr Medici parked up and sat quietly in their 4x4 alongside the track the rain drumming on the roof above  as they watched the jockey maneuver the horses into the chutes. “I’m guessing that’s harder than it looks” Castel exclaimed with a chuckle “you’re spot on there” Rupert replied watching the track intently.

The bell sounded the gates clattered open Landshark was as quick off the mark as ever as he powered off down the track. And then it happened those few moments felt like hours as Rupert Castel and Dimitri watched the events unfold “Shit” Ruper cried as he watched Oblivion bucking and rearing frantically his jockey unable to regain control fell to the ground as the loose horse bolted towards the pack in a wild panic. “No No No this isn’t good” Oblivion was nearing the group and showed no signs of stopping he ran out across the path of the oncoming horses snapdragon veered in an attempt to avoid a him. Blackbeard shrieked as the chestnut colt ploughed into him knocking him to them both to the ground before either could move firebird was on top of them ploughing on through, there was nothing to be done. Silence descended in the car the blood drained from their faces Nothing was said, Rupert fumbled to turn the key in the ignition as Castel pulled out his phone dialing the emergency services. As they arrived at the scene it was worse than they thought  four jockeys down, three horses fallen and one loose horse on the run. Rupert looked around in shock  noticing the vet and medic driving up towards the accident. It was  as if time stood still, Blaklion was now up on his feet and running panicked as soon as someone neared him. Snapdragon Raised himself onto his feet slowly limping as he was led off to the sidelines his jockey lay on his side unresponsive as one of the medics rushed over. Blackbeards cries cut through the air as he writhed around attempting to get up, trying to make sense of his broken leg. His jockey was motionless her body lay trapped beneath him her face buried in the mud. Rupert ran over to Blackbeard and Anjelica the medic looked up at rupert with a gimm look as he shook his head slowly. Moments past moments that felt endless Rupert looked around he fought the tears that were welling up inside him. Everything around him was silent almost in slow motion Blaklion and Snapdragon were being assessed further down the track buy another vet. The Air Ambulance crew were loading Snapdragons jockey into a stretcher the other fallen jockeys had had the once over and were deemed okay they stood holding each other at the side of the track one in tears the other shocked and silent as they watched an ambulance crew carry a stretcher and bodybag toward Anjelica. The silence was broken by a hand on Rupert's shoulder “Sir?” The vet said looking grave “Any chance?” Rupert muttered knowing the answer already  “No. I’m afraid not the break is much too severe even if there was a chance the risk of infection is too high” The stallion lay still his sides heaving as he breathed heavily Rupert knelt down beside him leaning in close as he scratched his favorite spot behind his ear whispering his goodbyes as the green screens went up around them.

TLDR - 
Training went wrong BB & Snapdragon collided after loose horse ran past
Snapdragon jockey airlifted to hospital 
BB jockey unconscious with likely major internal injurys but ultimately died after drowning 
BB broken his leg had to be euthanised on scene 

I Had planned to do some more steeple chase with him but i couldent concentrate knowing i had this half done in the bg
