2006 Panorama Contest Results

Test

Before I start, I want to thank everyone for their support - this contest has been running for almost half a year and many of you have played a key role in either donating prizes or drumming up support within the community. It has been a devious effort to remember!

The only commonality in this contest was the fact that entrants set out to create panoramas. The guidelines were simple: use at least 5 frames, create a final piece no more than 3000 pixels tall / wide, and stick to traditional darkroom techniques. By August 1st I had received a total of 453 submissions which met the contest criteria. Stunning. Each piece was different from the last - different views, different subjects, different concepts, and different ways of finding loop-holes within the contest rules.

The winning entries reflect the difficulty of creating a panorama - from harsh lighting conditions, finding a sweeping view in dense urban architecture, or exposing all four walls of a tiny apartment in a 360 degree photograph. Many Deviants who entered (including the finalists) had never stitched a panorama together - it was exciting to learn that these individuals had challenged the cannons, learned something new, and created something beautiful in the process. Congrats to all.

Below are the winning entries - listed in order from Grand Prize, First Place, Second Place, and Third Place. The votes were enough to clearly seperate these four pieces from the rest of the pack - choosing a runner up would be difficult if not impossible. Between these four pieces the votes were close; the job of the judges was not an easy one and I would like to thank the following for their selfless work;

Wow, the entries are just stunning. Was there a poll I could look at to see the rest of the top entrants? All of these are so fantastic that I just know there are more awesome pieces...

Congrats to all, and thank you so much Evan and company for putting on this contest!

No, unfortunately not - next time I'd like to set up a system where anyone can browse through the entries - I just didn't have the time / knowledge to do that with this one. Any tips?

Maybe make a flickr group where people can submit their one and only entry? Any duplicates found at the end when tallied up be disqualified?

Either that or talk to one of the gallery directors and have a submission area on deviantart so that it becomes deviantart official? For example the competitions gallery area.

Still in awe of these results .. keep popping by every so often since their release just to stare in wonder again :D

flickr is a good idea, although I think I'd try approaching a gallery director first - it would be nice to keep everything 'in-house' this time around

Three weeks till England!

No, I can't really think of a way to showcase so many hundred images, I imagine that's a massive amount of work that no one person could do in an expedient manner. Too bad there isn't a bulk uploader tool like with most online galleries! I could host them privately on my Smugmug account, which has unlimited storage and bandwidth, but that's all I can think of...

Thanks again and take care,
-Matt-
PS: How does the 1-year subscription award take effect? I am already subscribed, until November, so does my free 1-year sub go to another winner? I thought it was possible to just buy an "extra" year but maybe I'm wrong.

I've asked the person who donated your award to sign you up for another full year - so that means you should be subscribed until November of 2007. If you don't see anything within the next week get back to me and I'll give them a nudge :threaten:

And I figured you'd like that one - hence the note I sent :)

Thank you all congratulants and congratulation to those, that are not me in this contest ;-)

It was exciting to find an email saying: you won the first place and to my surprise, it wasn't only a joke. It is true that I am little bit into panoramas as you can see in my gallery [link] but I really didn't expect to be one of the winners.

Thank you all for you support!
