Ultrasuede GTK Theme

This is a "pre-release" version of my new GTK theme, Ultrasuede. Any comments/hints appreciated!

To use this theme, extract to /usr/share/themes/ (using sudo) or ~/.themes/ (normal) and select it with the "customise..." dialog in Gnome Appearances Preferences.

This theme is designed to be used with the Dust Metacity theme.

Thanks to monkeymagico ([link]) for help with inactive, selected text and combobox menus.

To do:
+ Fix dark text on toolbar buttons (should be light)
+ Fix various Firefox compatibility issues (current fix just takes off dark toolbar) <-- include userchrome.css?

Nice work just downed it - could you please explain exactly how you might like the menu's?

Not quite sure but I think I read somewhere a while back how to change menu colours independently.

Basically, I want menus that drop down from a dark menubar to be dark...All other menus should be that light sandy colour. So, right-click menus, the start menu, combobox menus, etc. should all be the lighter colour.

Ok I understand will see if I can find a solution... Narf knows what he's doing and may well be right but it's worth a try...

Cheers :)

What have you been using for reference when creating these themes?

I'm kind of interested in learning this too...

To be honest, everything I know has been trial and error! Start with a theme you like and start tweaking. Find a couple good themes you like and look at the gtkrc for those themes to incorporate other elements. And you may find the following useful:

Good luck!

Darn, I was hoping there was a complete reference somewhere...

Anyway, thanks for that, I'll definitely give it a go when I have some free time.

great smooth look, very tasteful!
good choice of brown colours

if you need some help, plz ask... :)

Thanks! I *do* need some help, actually, if you know of a way to make menubar menus different colour from other ones (see my previous comment). I'm sure it can be done, but I'm not familiar enough with how widgets are named!

i think it isn´t possible, cause if you have a look here [link] and you also read the GtkMenu explanation, there´s just this widget "GtkMenu" for all Menus :(
just option and combo menus can have another color, imo

Hm...I was just wondering if you could nest the matching, like I know that Espresso uses something like "*.*.*.*.*Toolbar" to match to toolbars inside frames...I may have a word with Giant Speck...
narf41's avatar
damn...i couldn´t figure out what it does :(
had you ask giant speck?
what did he say?

sorry for my late reply, but i was really busy today
i´ll have a look at it tomorrow :)

Looks pretty nice, but the darker/menu side looks pretty dark to me, and I'd change the font or the color itself to a clearer one.

Thanks :)

The menus are of particular concern to me...I prefer the dark ones to drop off the menubar, but I would actually prefer all the others to be light. In fact, the only reason I currently have a dark panel (I would prefer it to be that light sandy colour) is so that it looks okay with the dark main menu. Like I said, work in progress ;)

I see. By the way, which Window Manager are you using? Metacity, Compiz, Emerald, etc.

Let's see how this turns anyway :) I'll put it in my favorites, and try to modify my GTK interfaces a bit more =P

In this screenie, I'm using Dust Metacity window decs, although I use Compiz as a WM.

I use Metacity, at the moment, but I sometimes thought of changing to other WM like the *box, or once for xmonad, which really looks neat with some haskell hacking :D
