As the Director of Community Development I am the person who represents your voice to the rest of the deviantART administration. I'm ultimately in charge of the Help Desk, the Policy Violations Team and our Chat network. Every Wednesday I will be releasing a report; updating you on the internal progress of the team and the projects that interest you most.
Before I go on, please allow me to introduce myself...
I first discovered deviantART in the middle of 2001, around July, but didnt join up till Dec 18, 2001, 10:24 PM. At that time I mainly went around looking at work and reading the forums for a good long while. Due to a bizarre obsession of mine, I kept swapping names and moving accounts for a long time before settling into this one.
The thing that struck me first off was all the art. At this point I had just begun dabbling in the digital field and was initially pulled here by that. And to me it was like discovering buried treasure, or finding the golden ticket.
But after the initial shock of all the art, what I got truly and completely hooked on was the community. The forums. The commenting. Journals. News posts. The Shoutbox. It was endless. It was literally impossible to get bored here.
And there were crazy events, like distramutarkal the DA Serial Killer game. The Angry Key Deviants, and other fun activities like those. Really involved forum games, the Devvies, silly contests and just life. That is what it really was. Just seething swirling life in all forms. That to me is what defines
A community is a living breathing interdependent thing. A grouping of people with similar interests. Creating bonds of friendship. Building little communities within the community. Evolution. You get the picture.
So why this guy? you might be thinking. First off, more than most people, I love a good party. One with tons of people. One filled with great atmosphere and excitement and as many possible things to keep everyone entertained. Like a circus that has a party raging inside it with art plastered all over the walls. The kind of party you never want to leave, and the only time you do leave is when you are simply too tired to stay awake one more minute; even then you muster up the energy to stick it out another hour.
This is exactly what I see in this community. This is the precise direction I am planning on steering this community. The virtual equivalent of walking up the street and being able to hear the beat booming from blocks away. A party in a huge warehouse with tons of rooms and something for every single person to do. The biggest rave you have ever heard of. One million plus people.
Or maybe you think there are too many people and there is no way that could ever be tied together. Well, lets look at what we have here. We have dAmn. We have the Forums. We have user pages with journal and polls. You comment on someones art and they come by your page and say hi, you go back, you see someone else that looks interesting and you start talking to them and that leads to four more people. Next thing you know in one day you have met 2 dozen new people.
But its all kind of disconnected right? We add a new system to Chat so that each room has its own associated Group page Theyll look much like user pages; only for channels. The founders and operators have control over the features of the web page (Whos favorites show up? Whose submissions show up? Who can post news?) just like they have control over who can stay and chat. And the result is; we can all connect and collectively share art in a brave new way!
How about we toss something like that into the mix? Also, how about a really great events system, unlike the one we have now; so that we can organize deviantMEETS and art events in our local areas more easily?
How about a print program that ANYBODY can use with no sign-up fee? And a more advanced NEWS system so that ANYONE can easily publish news and browsing community news is easier and more fun?
The sky is the limit here, and if you guys want to have fun, I got the stamina. And as of now, you can find me all over DA. In the forums, writing news, hanging in dAmn. Check out #ClownTown, you can catch me in there if you want to shoot the breeze, tell me your ideas, or just chill out and enjoy the ride!
