Mage staff

A "mage staff" I recently made on commission! ^_^

The wooden staff was bought at a store.

The gem is made of resin, poured inside a "mould" made of tiny triangles of plastic held together with adehesive tape.

The roots that hold the gem are made of papier-mache

The "metal" decoration of the staff is made of Das synthetic clay, colored with acrylics.

As a last touch I added the dark-red leather "ribbons" and handle covering.

That's freakin' awesom, i'm working on a staff right now for fun. Found a piece of waterlogged bois d'arc and thought it was mages staff material!

Looks really cool! Did you make the shapes for the mold yourself or did you find something to use instead?

I am also starting to make staves of this kind using found or cut wild wood. The one pictured here is an inspiration! I hope that I can someday make something equally as beautiful.

I've always wanted to "make" a staff of my own, but I always get discouraged when I consider that the wood might not be strong enough, and I never follow through.

For yours, I assume it'd be either a prop, or part of a costume? Not used for fighting (play, choreographed, etc.), am I right?

Not that I have plans to go out on the town with my staff striking citizens and civilians, but I would like something sturdy.

Either way, back to the point, your creation is glorious and looks wonderful! The only qualm I have with it (and this is PURELY personal) is that the gem isn't symmetrical and I am a HUGE stickler for symmetry on things. Otherwise, wonderful! :D

Do you have plans for anything similar to this?

Mm I can imagine it being less organic looking if the gem was symmetrical though, and I think that would take away from the pieces current charm. I like symmetry as well I just think it looks better as is.

... although now I really want a quarter staff with a perfectly spherical moonstone on top. :meow:

Very nice, I am actualy making a staff for a costume with roughly the same materials. The resin crystal however is going to be lit from within giving it a magical glow.

You did a great job on this!

Oh my god. Miss, you now have my undivided attention. How much would one of these cost to make and ship? I very much want one now. You are an amazing maker of shiny things.

Aww, thanks!

Uhm, I'm not sure about the shipping cost, because it depends on weight, anyway to give you a VERY rough estimate, I think the cost of making the staff and shipping, could be around 500 euro give or take.
(I use an online converter to check the cost for different currencies: [link] )

It's the truth, anyway, so no need to be like that.

On another point, I'll have to definitely see about finding a wa y to buy one of these. Granted, it'd brand me as the geekiest man I know, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
