John Z. DeLorean, who was the driving force behind Pontiac in the mid 60's, and the GM vice president at the same time, left GM in the late 1970's to start his own car company. The DeLorean Motor Company set up base in Ireland and released their first production car, the DMC-12, in 1981. The chassis was made by Lotus and the body was created by Italdesign. The engine was a PRV SOHC V6 capable of 128 HP mounted in the rear. Of course, the thing that attracted people the most was the iconic gull-wing doors. 6500 DMC-12s were sold in its first year, but during this, the company president was arrested on suspicion of drug possession. It ended with a not guilty verdict, but DMC went bankrupt in 1983, after a total of 8500 cars had been sold. After this, the entire DMC-12 inventory was shipped to the U.S. and passed onto a new DMC which maintenanced the cars. Responding to requests by owners, this company announced a tuning menu which increased the engine power to 197 HP. DeLoreans fitted with this engine are called Series 2.
