Shaped by the Roses
Beer, nature, and art; things you'll find plenty of walking the streets of downtown Portland.  Portland isn't a massive metropolis.  Nor is it a small town in the middle of nowhere.  It isn't known for its sports though fans here are some of the craziest in the nation.  It didn't impact the music world like its neighbor Seattle, but it makes an honest effort.  It doesn't often make national headlines, but if you look hard enough you'll see its influence everywhere.
To truly find Portland one just has to open their eyes.  Maybe you'll find it in the sunset glimmering off the buildings and on to the waterfront.  Perhaps you'll find it tucked away in a little willow covered lane in the suburbs.  Or you might not even find it in the city at all, but in the beautiful wilderness that is only ever a hop and skip away.  Honestly your best chance is in one of the many breweries that dot the cityscape.
The norms of Portland have defined me in many way

Loveless Sky
Drink, smoke, eat and sleep
It's for this world that I weep
Walk these streets all alone
No vibrations from the phone
Angels have fallen down
Heaven breaks all around
No longer does the sky hold peace
That is, for me at least.

5 Ways to Get Fantasy Wrong
Yes, you're writing a fantasy story. Yes, that means many of the normal "rules" of reality are suspended. It doesn't mean you can just write whatever you like and expect your readers to swallow it. The existence of dragons they'll probably accept. Moscow being the capital of France they probably won't.
The key to "selling" weird, fantasy stuff to your reader (like dragons and half-elves) is making the world at large believable. This means getting the simple things right. So on that note:
1. Factual Errors
There are things in the wide-world of fiction that are fantasy elements; things like dragons, unicorns, and women who find beards sexy. There are other things in the wide-world of fiction that are factual elements; things like the speed of an average horse, the boiling point of water, and the observation that iron rusts.
Clearly, these are not two distinct categories that can have a line neatly drawn between them. You may have creat

The How To's of Dialogue: Grammar and Otherwise
When writing dialogue, it's easy to get confused as to what's proper grammar and what isn't. This is no surprise when considering all the variables involved, but not to worry. I'm going to go over the rules and variables of dialogue right now so you can clearly understand the do's and dont's.
This guide has eight sections:
- Basic Dialogue
- Using other Identifiers
- Actions as Replacement Identifiers
- Interrupting Dialogue
- Using Ellipses, Hyphens, and Dashes
- Paragraphing
- Long-Winded Dialogue
- Italics (Expanded: 5-1-12)
- One Last use of Italics (New: 5-1-12)
Basic Dialogue:
Example A1:
The man said, "Pass me the cricket bat."
The woman said, "I don't think I will."
- Observations:
     1) A comma after "said," before the quotation mark.
     2) The first letter of dialogue is capitalized since it is the first word of a vocalized sentenc

I write...stuff. Really though, I like to post crappy poetry and some half decent short story pieces on here as well as my amateur photography. I'm learning right alongside a lot of you and always willing to help out and talk to people.
