Beer, nature, and art; things you'll find plenty of walking the streets of downtown Portland.  Portland isn't a massive metropolis.  Nor is it a small town in the middle of nowhere.  It isn't known for its sports though fans here are some of the craziest in the nation.  It didn't impact the music world like its neighbor Seattle, but it makes an honest effort.  It doesn't often make national headlines, but if you look hard enough you'll see its influence everywhere.
To truly find Portland one just has to open their eyes.  Maybe you'll find it in the sunset glimmering off the buildings and on to the waterfront.  Perhaps you'll find it tucked away in a little willow covered lane in the suburbs.  Or you might not even find it in the city at all, but in the beautiful wilderness that is only ever a hop and skip away.  Honestly your best chance is in one of the many breweries that dot the cityscape.
The norms of Portland have defined me in many way

Loveless Sky
Drink, smoke, eat and sleep
It's for this world that I weep
Walk these streets all alone
No vibrations from the phone
Angels have fallen down
Heaven breaks all around
No longer does the sky hold peace
That is, for me at least.

January 2012: The Troll and the Termagant
Many years ago in the Kingdom of Mariam, there was a King, Rolf, who was a jolly old soul who loved a good joke, and gave to all those he saw in need. But he was in need of a firm hand; his advisors have been known to take advantage of the King's good nature to further their own estates. Fortunately, Queen Evelyn was a very wise and beautiful woman. One might say she was a gentle woman, but she seemed to have a certain unholy glee in her eye when she turned a greedy advisor's plans against him.
Unfortunately, the Queen did not have a strong constitution and, as often did happen in the age before reason and medicine, she died in child birth. Some may say that Princess Tamarin was even more beautiful than her mother, but they were just trying to suck up to the King. In fact, the Princess was rather plain for her species; she was however, as uncommonly clever as her mother had ever been. Even at a very young age, an unholy light shone in her eyes when she thwarted an advisor's plans.

The Secret to Proper Paragraphing
Once you know what your characters and doing and saying, how do you get all that down on Paper without ending up with a huge confusing mess?
Putting the Story on Paper.
Everybody knows that when a new speaker speaks they get a new paragraph, right? In other words, you DON'T put two different people talking in the same paragraph. Okay, yeah, so anyone who has written any kind of fiction learns this pretty darned quick, (usually from their readers.)
What nobody seems to get is that the same goes for a new character's ACTIONS. Seriously, when a new character ACTS they're supposed to get their own paragraph -- even if they don't speak!
In short, you paragraph by change in CHARACTER -- not because they speak, but because they ACT. Ahem... Dialogue is an ACTION. In other words, the reason you don't put two different characters' Dialogue in the same paragraph is BECAUSE you don't mix two characters' Actions. Okay?

I write...stuff. Really though, I like to post crappy poetry and some half decent short story pieces on here as well as my amateur photography. I'm learning right alongside a lot of you and always willing to help out and talk to people.
