Bluebeard by littlecrow Bluebeard by littlecrow
Whoops, sorry for the double post, but here's a properly sized file!

This is a class assignment from a while ago, but I didn't upload it yet.... the original is actually 30 inches wide and I felt that smaller versions of it didn't look near as good. Oh well. People still seemed to like it, so here it is.

This is an illustration for the story Bluebeard, with the ghosts of Bluebeard's seven dead wives trying to warn his newest wife as she ventures into the forbidden room.

(and of course, in the story, Bluebeard is not there, but discovers what has happened later, but oh well, it makes a more dramatic picture to have him lurking in the doorway. ^_^)

The story is not persian.... I'm not really sure why I decided on a persian influence for costumes. It seemed to be a good idea at the time. .... even if Bluebeard ends up looking a bit like the sultan from Aladdin. whups.

This was colored completely in Painter, which probably was not the wisest choice given the enormous size of it. Especially since I was using watercolor tools. Much frustration and crashing and waiting for effects to finish. Watercolor and charcoal brushes. Painter's watercolor effects give some really interesting textures.

The mood of the picture is absolutely perfect. It should be an illustration in an anthology. c:

I reckon Guillermo del Toro should do a movie about this....or something similar. The bluebeard story has the same sort of terrifying beauty as his Pan's Labyrinth. OMG Just read Fearless by Cornelia Funke, which has a bluebeard in it and OMG I'm reading the bit where the table is set for 10 (10 unknown wives) and then the room with the dead girls hanging from chains and i'm like "This is sooooo not a kids book!" haha

I love the story of Bluebeard, as a child I was really scared of him
The expressions of the ghosts are very well done, the whole drawning shows the tension of the story
Great job! :D

I love the colour scheme. But I adore the fluidity of the line art especially where it concerns the ghosts.

The addition of the ghosts of Bluebeard's former wives really gives the entire scene a darker, more emotional feel. In most illustrations, the new wife is depicted alone, which merely provides an accent to the surrounding writing. Here, you've captured the essence of the entire story in one image. It's very impressive.

Absolutely beautiful. The composition is so wonderful how your eyes flow from one thing to the next. And that great red ribbon cutting across the whole page, really brilliantly thought out! I love the Persian touch to this, makes look all the more mysterious and fairytale-esque. and Ahhh I could go on and on about your work! I love it!

This is gobsmackingly, exquisitely LOVELY.
I love the progression of emotions on the ghosts' faces.

I found it interesting that you gave Bluebeard an eastern look - Gustave Dore did the same in his illustration for the story.
I think "Bluebeard" has always been vaguely associated with the Orient - perhaps because of another wife-killing nobleman in the 1001 Nights?

You know, when I did this I specifically remember deciding to research Persian costume, but for the life of me I can't remember why now. Perhaps some sort of similar feeling to 1001 Nights, as you suggest...

Kind of; the class is all about Fairy Tales, and we study specific tale types during different segments. This segment my group is looking at Bluebeard, and we have to do a 20 min interactive presentation on any part of our Fairy Tale that we want. My group is doing the motivations and messages behind the actions in the Bluebeard tale type through an interactive choose-your-own-story.

:phew:

Or, at least, that is what we are planning on.

You've captured the mood of this moment so beautifully! I agree it seems more dramatic with Blue Beard there than if he wasn't. I love the elegant lines and movement in this picture, too.
How as you move down looking at each past wife, you sort of become as worried as the last two wives when you realize 'oh crap...he's here D8'(crudely stated :XD:;)

This picture is gorgeous and I can't stop looking at it!

(I love this story)

Yes, I think that's my trick with Painter. I know how to do a few tricks that people haven't seen before, which distracts them away from the fact that I don't actually know how to color things very well!

But shhhhh... don't tell anyone. ^_^
