Sun-rain opens skies
And mouths, thirsty for a taste
Of mineral warmth

Tenderly, it falls
Caressing snowy cheeks of
Asphodel petals

Ripples in a pond
Erase oak tree reflections
Drowning amber fall

Thunder laughs, clouds shake
And pitter-patter onto
Xylophone ceilings

If tears leave scars, rain
Would squeeze petrichor from earth
To carve with heaven
“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” -A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

Petrichor-the scent of the first rain after a dry spell.

I came up with a prompt for our poetry club so we can all practice imagery: think of a theme, then use 5 haikus, each focusing on a different sense, to portray it. I didn't really know where I was going with this at first, but I just really wanted to use the word petrichor. :P

I don't usually do that well with imagery-based poems, but I really like this one. Especially the ripples and reflection, and the xylophone ceiling.

Thank you so much!

Why don't you do well with imagery-based poems? Curious.

I feel like my ability to translate words to images isn't that good in general. Maybe I'm just not used to it since I always grew up on video games where the imagery is already all there...

Haha I see. That makes sense. It's often hard to translate words to images. I have trouble with that myself: if writers start describing people/locations, I sometimes just skip it. :P

Haha, that's why I think visual novels are good, it gives some basic imagery, so that you have a good picture of the scenes and the characters, but it's still mostly text...
I think I'm also just biased because it's interactive. Even if the only action is clicking to advance the text, I think that makes a big difference to me.

Haha yeah visual novels are cool. Though I like books because you can flip back and forth. :P

Yep, interactivity is great. Though the old-fashioned stuff are sometime more accessible, I think.

I so totally agree!! Having a book in possession is such a special feeling. getting it from the book store, and hugging it all the way home. sometimes it rains and I'll need to hide in my clothe, that feeling of not caring if I get rained on as long as my book is safe. and getting home, sometimes I would put a hand made cover for it, and know it'll be protected. and when I fall in love with a book, I'll take it with me when I go to bed and sleep holding it in my hand. that crackly sound when you open a new book too!! the way it smells and touch of the paper texture. I human it's easier to love something material than completely virtual and up in the air.

I'm not that good at taking care of books, so books from my childhood are always teared then taped back carefully, with stains here are there. but it really makes it feel like my own. That what I love is not just the story, but it has to be MY book, with all the marker lines and folded pages.

Haha that's very true. I'm very glad for the internet, don't get me wrong. I can't read most of the manga I've read without it. But when I really like a series I would buy it and read it in bed and feel the pages. :)

Oh, did I tell you? Recently my parents let me buy 3 volumes of Higurashi as a present for completing college apps. Yayness! :D

This is so lovely. I really like your use of personification and metaphor in this poem. I didn't know there was a term for the scent of the first rain after a dry spell. :D That's a really interesting word.

Thank you so much! Haha now you get a preview of our next poetry club meeting. :D

I know right? I learned petrichor through reading someone else's poem on Deviantart.
