I find my connection to this world becoming more tenuous with each year that passes, seeking new ways to dissociate from it ever more readily whilst dwelling on things that have been, that could be, and that could never be, rather than those things that are. Slowly drowning in an ever-churning sea of nostalgia, fancy, and fantasy. When one becomes as weary of this reprobate reality as I have, one finds oneself welcoming the cold yet comforting call of blissful oblivion. Of absence. Of the singularly perfect and all-encompassing darkness. For what could be more horrible than remaining present in a world that abhors your very presence? Should one not seek after the solace offered by the shadows? The most merciful things in the world are to forget and to be forgotten. To be left alone to drift eternal along black channels of nothingness. There are, no doubt, those who are of a stronger mental constitution and a more adamant will than I who may disagree with what I have intimated

Dead tongues whisper a discordant rhyme Hollow throated beckoning from the tomb The acrid air which brushes the thyme A dolorous susurrus steeped in gloom The sorrowful strains of gnawing decay Permeate the halls where specters lurk In desolate crypts where shadows hold sway Watching and waiting within the murk Quivering dark forms crawl across cold stone Writhing and grasping for the warmth long fled Through tearing of flesh and creaking of bone The funeral march of the unquiet dead They yearn for thy life, no matter the cost What price, redemption, when all has been lost?

You wake up. You stir from your insomnolent slumber and walk numbly to the next nondescript room. You catch sight of your reflection in an incongruous mirror. Your reflection is one of an amorphous and liminal entity, neither male nor female, neither human nor beast, neither demonic nor divine, neither living nor dead, and yet all of these at once, and yet equally none of these at all. You strike the mirror with your fist and it shatters. You watch as your blood seeps out from around the shards of glass embedded in your hand. Your blood snakes down your hand, dribbles down your forearm, and finally drips down from your elbow to the floor. Your fallen blood pools on the floor, the liquid surface reflective in and of itself, your reflection cast back at you from within it, ruddy and mutable. You remove a shard of glass from your hand, stick it in the bottom of your palm and slide it down to the crook of your arm, your malleable flesh parting like the proverbial sea. Your blood cascades

The ancient underground chamber reeked of limestone and rotting flesh. Damp stone walls constantly dripped with condensation, forming small pools of water in the craggy crevices scattered about. The sound of vermin scuttling across the cavern floor echoed throughout the expanse, while other unknown creatures watched from the shadows, menacing white eyes gleaming intently in the darkness. The environs were pitch black, save for the scant illumination provided by a small number of lit torch sconces that lined the walls of the sacellum, revealing a congregation of figures wearing simple black hooded robes, gathered around a stone altar on a raised platform at the far end of the chamber. Each of these figures stood with their head bowed and their hands tucked into their sleeves, arms at rest across their abdomens. At the center of the circle, kneeling next to the altar, was a figure dressed similarly to the other supplicants, but adorned with overlapping silver chains across his torso
