amazing drawing... normally I don't :+fav:fav watermarked artworks but this is too awesome, going to have to break my rule!  I really like the pencil/sharpie combination, your dark backgrounds really add a lot, and must be time-consuming to do with this much finesse.  I use a pentel brush-pen for laying in black background, have you tried those?  I still have to adjust the contrast though, as the scanner makes everything look a bit grey.  Great work Lily! round of applause: :iconclappingplz:

More general note: I love your style, approach and subject matter.. don't stop.  Also check out Mielytu 's work, I think you would like it :)

Hehe, I'm glad you did. The black part of my pictures does often take the longest time but is my favourite part, I write a stream of unconscious thought into them, pour back into the void. I will definitely look into the pentel brush-pen for it, thank you! Mielytu's work if phenomenal and I can see similarities in approach to my own. It has a very similar feel and perspective. As does a lot of yours. I look forward to talking more with you :)

that's very interesting.. so the space-filling of the background isn't just about filling it with darkness, but it's a meditative, introspective process that you actually invest a lot of yourself into...  I must admit that I love doing the same, but I use the brush pen which must be a lot quicker.  Still, I enjoy the sensuous feeling of it, the repetitive movements, the flow of ink and the gradual filling of white space with black Pixel Icon: Ink-Heart (F2U!)

Very much so. It maaaay also be that I get a little high off the fumes from it haha. Open to the possibility xD One of the pieces I did reversed the process, the two girls in the negative space, filled them with the things we would say to each other in that moment. I think a lot of it is to put into the universe the thoughts. Sometimes the intention to let it go, other times to bring it about as a want. To know that even though you can't see what is written, it is there. The energy, the intention, exists within that space.

it's interesting, the texture that you create with that technique of space-filling with your black sharpie, it's suggestive of books stacked on bookshelves (at least, it is to me)..it's evoking those tottering fantasy libraries in the works of Borges, also in "The Name of the Rose", in "Game of Thrones" and "Gormenghast".. and I suppose that's no coincidence either.  The mark-making alludes to writing, and I'm not surprised to hear that you undertake it with the same mental attitude - in other words, it's not just simply "colouring in", which is what I do when I make a dark background.

It very much is like that in some of them, the very deliberate repetitive motions are like individual thoughts. In some pieces its a far more fluid and disconnected process, using the dark to create patterns around the light in order to focus attention to areas of it. There is one that can have a completely different meaning when you take into context the picture in the black. That you have to look into the dark for the light to make sense. It gives it a different context. 08-28-27 - Pinkie Swears by LilyUnsub

yes, I can see bits of writing, and a sort of whirlpool, but if there's other imagery in the background, I can't see it.. but I sense there is something else there.  I love pictures with secrets!

if you like hidden secrets. This is the only one that I also have a photo of before I filled in the void. But you can still see what is written though I believe. This one is very much a deep open wound that I keep picking at when its almost healed.

Been working on blending the shades to bring out the finer lines on certain aspects and give more realism but maintaining the kind of noir-esque style. Is probably my favourite because of what its about.

think it could be a good way to contrast between shadows and shading
