:star: PLEASE NOTICE, I want to stress that this article is in no way an official DeviantART article. I posted it as an ordinary deviant and on my own responsibility. Also note that I am not a member of the DeviantART staff, I am a Volunteer Gallery Moderator.

A few months back some people started to have insanely high pageviews and we wondered how that can be. Well, it's incredibly easy, those people are running a simple php script called a "bot" to manipulate the DeviantART pageview counter. Well, if people can polish their self esteem with it, fine. But now something else is going on with those pageview bots. Some very clever people now offer pageviews for points and real money and you know what? PEOPLE ACTUALLY DO THAT!!!

Deviants, are you really that blind? The pageviews you get are no actual pageVIEWS, it's JUST A NUMBER without any real visitor coming to your page.

What is a bot?

A 'bot' is a simplified term for 'robot', it's a piece of software designed to complete tasks and / or simulate human activity. They are capable of performing these tasks at speeds that are simply impossible for people to do. There are many different types of bots and several types of common Internet bots that are called web crawlers or web spiders.

What is a bot?

More details from the Internet

:bulletred: How it works:

You pay your points or send money to paypal and after a while the con merchant runs the script on your page. It costs him a few seconds and there you have your 1.000 or 10.000 or whatever pageviews in no time, depending what you payed for. Ok, now you have an increased number sitting on your pageview statistics, nothing more. No more visitors as usual have seen your art, nobody gave you favs or commented your art or watched you. It's just an ordinary number. So if you are really that desperate go on and spend your money for a number. It won't change anything for you but at least you got rid of your points or money.

:bulletred: Please be aware:

The pageview merchants don't sell pageviews, they merely sell the ILLUSION OF PAGEVIEWS. I know what you really want is ATTENTION, RECOGNITION AND FEEDBACK. You will not find what you seek by paying someone for increasing your pageview counter.

:bulletred: To the fake pageview merchants:

You distort the website statistics of whole DeviantART and destroy the meaning of it. As long as you are manipulating your own page just for fun - fine. But if you start making profit with automated use actions on this site - this is ABUSE of the system. I know you think you only give the people what they want. But it's not true. People want ATTENTION! And that's not what you sell and you keep it a secret what you really do.

Back around December 2016 - January 2017 I started to get a large number of pageviews and I have no idea why or how. I didn't pay or ask anyone to give me more pageviews. I also never even heard of this scam before. So can someone give you more pageviews by a bot with out you noticing?? The highest pageviews I got in one day was 300, it was on January 9, 2017. Also there were other days where it got up in the 100s-200s. I never ever had that much before or after. Right now I average around 15-20 pageviews a day.

Yes, that's possible. I am not sure to this day how it is technically done but you can generate way more than 300 pageviews per day with a bot. I can't even imagine why anyone would do that on your page without you noticing. But it happens.

I've been getting high views since the 26th of December and I've never done anything with a bot.. in fact, I'm trying to figure out how to get them to stop. I installed a visitor map and that shows muuuuuuuch lower numbers. dA help was...well no help.

I figure you can't get them stopped. Sometimes it's mystery how the pageviews are generated. I experience the same from time to time.

How weird! I searched on this subject after hearing about a similar practice on YOutube. THIS might explain why I occasionally run across inexplicably high view counts on some galleries!
Apparently, for youtube, there are websites which will sell you views for for your video!

I fail to understand what good fake pageviews are but if it is something that makes the person wishing for them feel better about themselves then I'm actually all for it! Everyone gains confidence in different ways and I encourage people to seek out what makes them feel better and happy!

This may be a bit out of date now, but.... I reported a deviant who I found quite openly selling pageviews for points - the official DA response was, in a nutshell, that they didnt care if someone was manipulating thier site for profit and taking advantage of other deviants - they were totally uninterested. I was totally gobsmacked :(

I guess the cash will still flow into the DA till regardless. Sad really so many people do take this site very seriously, afterall they pay for their galleries and spend a Lot of their time here.

I do not, in any way possible, doubt that you would feel that way.
It's absolutely disgusting how far this site goes with it's fucking apathy. And it's getting quite tiresome. In fact, it's why I left for awhile.
This site is supposed to be about art, not popularity. And I'm absolutely appalled that they'll let this occur.

Why would anyone spend money on online games for stupid virtual crap?

Why spend money on premium accounts on dA for stupid virtual privileges they wouldn't have had otherwise?

Why spend money on points?

Why llamas?

Or, better yet, why are you so concerned about the points and money of other people that don't concern you in any way, shape or form? Also, it's not a scam as long as they deliver on their promise, which most do.

Another thing, most of us don't use bots or anything of the sort. |: It's a stupid, arbitrary number, it doesn't affect you in any way and doesn't stop people from viewing your page.

I keep getting visited by this guy who offers pageviews for points and I knew it smelt funny. It's quite an insult really, I mean what am I some kinda schnook? no!

There is no REAL way of getting the mass amount of pageviews one may want. That is unless your art is spiffingly awesome, or you just waste your day refreshing your page or something to this effect.

Oh gee! People can really do that with dA system?.....WOW!.....
REAL money for FAKE pageviews.....excuse me (I know, this is serious) but this makes me giggle, I just can't believe that people actually were willing to accept that silly deal! :giggle:....
I mean, I understand the fact most of the times people feel devaluated when they don't have a lots of pageviews, or simply don't have self-steem and need pageviews to feel good, but it's a matter of common sense to know that there's no way to obtain pageviews other than let the people to come to your gallery for their own will (by improving your art or inviting your friends, link your site in another place, or stuff like that) and there's no such thing as someone who can give you pageviews instantly! So I think even if they didn't knew what this person really was doing, even so, people should have known that it was a trick!
I personally, if someone had offered me a deal like that, of course I would have realized that something was wrong with that. And in fact, I don't care about pageviews! I cos I'm not here to be famous, since when I signed here I always knew I was here just for the sake of art, cos I LOVE ART!!! :excited: I love to do it and I love to admire other people's art! So I don't care about that, I'm here to give tribute to the people here who make awesome art, and to share my art cos it has my vision of the world and I want to share my perspective of the wolrd with people! My art always has a message, a message of love and peace and hope (even if it may sound hippie or a cliché :XD: ) a message of goodness, and freedom, of bliss, and that's what I want to bring to people, that's what I always wanted with all my heart!! :excited: with all the strength of my soul!!...with...well...I think got carried away :giggle:
But yeah, as I was going to say, I personally wouldn't never use a trick like that, even on my own page, because that wouldn't mean anything. And I'm glad this article is helping people, think it's really useful and great!! Because it makes people who still don't realize it, to be aware that they don't buy more atention, but a fraud! And so this person will not be able to keep doing this fraud cos it will not be anyone who can believe it! And I love the way you explained why this is not a good deal, and why the pageviews that this person sells doesn't mean anything cos they're fake, and specially the fact that you explained how this person is manipulating the system with a script and what's a "bot"! Cos reading this fact people will realize more that you're right, and also because it satisfy my scientific mind! :giggle: :D
It's that I was investigating this as a "mystery" or something! :XD: Since several days ago I noticed some people who had joined like one month ago or one year ago had and unusually high number of pageviews, but they didn't had many faves or coments as you could expect of a "so popular deviant" so it piqued my scientific curiosity and I wanted to know why this phenomenom, and thanks to you know what was the mistery and how this was done. And I learned an interesting fact about scripts! :D I think it's very interesting how people can do this with a script...

I haven't ever bought any pageviews nor will I do so in future.
Though my pageviews have increased in a short amount of time, it went from 10000 to 12000 pageviews.

Plus I don't have much to show either.

I'm not sure, but I may be a victim.

It's why I don't really care about that stuff anymore. When I first got on here, I thought the more pageviews you got the more people really liked your art. That was bs. Then I thought, well if I get a DD then maybe people will pay attention to me. Then I realized that was just a bunch of bs, and that it's more of just a favoritism thing, and that most of the art that gets the DD's pales in comparison to some of the people on my friends list. So  That was when I really stopped caring about this website. It's all favoritism, and I guess because I don't play that game I won't get noticed on here. Oh well. Don't care anymore. I do my art for me, and if people like it... great. But like many artists on here, it's a struggle just to get your stuff seen, and I refuse to spam people's pages and annoy others to no end to get that.

Knowing the right people can help a lot, in this point DA is no different from the "real" world. Anyway first and foremost my DD picks are based on what I really like and believe deserves more attention.

Aww, that's so sweet of you to say. It's one of my faves too. But it pales in comparison to everything in your gallery, lol! I love all of your work.

Things have been a little hectic for me lately, and I haven't even touched the camera for macro shots in probably a year. I miss it desperately. I just have been so busy. But I'm really glad that you like my stuff. It means the world to me!!! I'm taking this summer off from school, and hopefully will have some time to take some photos.
