Portrait Study 01 (Dec 2017) by Lillendandie Portrait Study 01 (Dec 2017) by Lillendandie
Another photo study from a picture I found on Pinterest. I'm not sure who the photographer is, but the model is Nastya Kusakina. I love her eyes and expression. Update: Thanks to some feedback, I've made some major changes.

Thank you! The model had very light colored hair. Something about it was very inspiring.
By the way, you have some wonderful portraits yourself. Can't wait to see your next piece. Love

As pretty as the model, I think.
What were the major changes you made?

I was browsing Pinterest when I came across this photo i.imgur.com/WmCCVca.jpg so my first attempt looked a lot different. Portrait Study 01 (WIP) Later I found the original photo i.imgur.com/AlKROgz.jpg and made a lot of changes to make her look more realistic.

I like both versions but prefer this one. The brush strokes are a little funky in the other.
She's got some frizzy hair! I'm glad you represented some of it in your portrait.

Yeah, I think i overused my "dry" brushes a bit. Sweating a little...

You'd be surprised how much crossover there is between digital and traditional once you know the tools. :D I actually use a method similar to this www.sightsize.com/about/ for these studies.

When I came across my reference for the first time, it was actually this picture i.imgur.com/WmCCVca.jpg that caught my eye but when I started painting it, I realized it was clearly photoshopped. So I went searching for the original photo. i.imgur.com/AlKROgz.jpg Turns out it was from a fashion show where they were clearly still in the process of styling her hair. The photo makes it a little more clear that there is this abrupt change in color if we compare her roots to the longer layers (which might possibly be extensions?). So you're right it is really awkward for a few reasons. I probably could balance out the texture / color / values out a little better next time.

Thanks for the critique. Critmas is over but you can crit any of my stuff in the future if you want. :D

Yes, I've been doing photo studies / using references lately because I'm trying to get better at specific things. I also picked up some pose dolls so I can work on my originals.
