Description
After being advised by the stray which had approached her. Charity spent her time outside debating the advice. She was unsure if she felt ready to join a pack, even be around other dogs for that matter. However on the other hand it may be better for her? afterall she'd have company, maybe she'd even find people that she could trust to have her back? No what was she thinking, no dog would trust her, not if they knew what she did in her past...
The weeks following the encounter Charity continued to argue with herself over a decision, just as she would come to a conclusion more opposing thoughts would come to her mind and she would back out yet again. An endless cycle of hot and cold, Yes and no, Go not go. It was driving her mad but she knew at some point she would have to make a decision. At some point she would have to choose whether to stay on her own, or to finally face her fear of being around other strays.
Weeks turned into a month and Charity was sniffing around in the grasses. Her stomach was growling and she was still struggling to find anything that she could eat. She was being forced to edge closer and closer to the city with each passing day she didn't eat and her nerves were getting worse and worse the closer she got. Before she was forced to actually step foot in the city however she met with the mysterious stray again. He dropped a small morsel on the damp grass in front of her, sitting down and watching as Charity raised herself from the ground where she had been cowering.
"I've been watching you for a while... you could use this more than I could" The stray mumbled.
He nudged the morsel with his paw towards her. Charity, nervous about his company lowered herself once again, taking a large bite of the the rabbit which the stray had dropped for her. They sat in silence as Charity ate, letting her take in the warmth of a fresh meal.
"I've given you this advice before... and I will give you it again... I advise that you join the Sicherer Hafen Pack which takes up residence around here... they are a pack not far from here, they refuse to take part in conflict and I believe you could fit right in with them, Not many dogs know about this pack and we intend to only take in those we feel are in dire need for help, like yourself." The stray suggested, when Charity seemed to calm down a little.
Charity looked up at the male, scanning him for any sign of intent to scam her, or to harm her in anyway. His intentions were clear, he only wanted to help her. Perhaps he saw himself in her or what not but when she asked for his name, he simply declined and gave her a small nod.
"that is unimportant... If you do wish to join the pack, you'll need the location of the pack grounds: In go humans, out comes stone. In the darkest of nooks is a world unknown. Below the monster which sits on its throne. Within these depths you'll find your new home" He advised, before raising again, nodding to her then turning to leave back into the trees where he had came from.
Charity wanted to tell him to wait, to ask if she would ever see him again but all he did was flick his ear in response.
"Maybe we will, maybe we won't, let fate decide that my dear Charity" he called as he disappeared from sight.
With that Charity was alone again and with a new found determination she rose to her paws again, she wanted to follow after him but she knew deep down that she'd have to find the place herself. She had to prove to the leader of the pack he had talked of that she was worthy of joining and that's just what she intended to do. Closing her eyes she let herself relax as her mind scanned the words of the riddle. Humans go in but stone came out, so the location must be a human made territory... Darkest of nooks suggests that the area is dark in someway, possibly deep underground? Below the monster which sits on its throne threw her slightly but it must have meant some sort of man-made object sat upon the area and so with her newfound information she took off into the undergrowth. She followed the scent of human stench and watched out for any sign of human objects that would be noticeable as being part of the riddle. She ran all through the night until she came to an open cave, she had grown tired and without thinking she hobbled into the cave, curling up in a corner to rest as she felt sleep take hold of her exhausted body.
The next morning she awoke to the eyes of 3 intimidating looking dogs. With a whimper she cowered from them earning a chuckle from deeper in the cave.
"I see she found us, I didn't think you'd come Charity, but I'm glad you did... Come on, I'll take you to Dutch" came the voice of the mysterious dog that had spoken to her before.
The familiarity of the voice soothed Charity and she slowly raised herself up from where she had been laying, her tail tucked between her legs but standing tall now in front of the 3 strays. As the light shone in through the entrance to the cave she noticed wooden beams in the cave and rusted buckets full of rock and coal. Of course it was a mine, humans go in and they bring out minerals from the land.
The three dogs around her stood into the light, one was a purebred Beagle, another was a Xolocuintzli and the last was a female husky cross. The male who spoke to her stood into the light and he was a chocolate Labrador retriever. With a comforting look he lead Charity to their high judge, Dutch.
After meeting with Dutch, Charity was given the option to bring back 3 objects for the pack to use. She was given the choice of how and what she brought back and if she was able to bring everything back she may be in for the chance of the pack accepting her.
heading off in the direction she had seen some poppies growing in a clump near where she had been staying. She was determined to join the pack now, for the hope that maybe she would find a place where she could finally feel safe in her life and so she spend days collecting resources she hoped the pack would enjoy.
By the time she set out to find the pack again, she had collected a few fresh rabbits, a mouthful of lavender and a good amount of poppies which the pack could use for pain relief should they need it. She packed it all into a basket which was laying around her temporary home and set off in the direction of where the mines were. she worried about presenting the offering to Dutch but could only hope that he would agree to let her join the pack.
