Taking a Critique by liiga Taking a Critique by liiga
Long, long time ago I wrote a tutorial entitled Giving a Critique and said there was a second part coming. It definitely took longer than a week (don't hit me), but uh at least it came! So I hope you enjoy the twisted little creatures and perhaps even the tips. :)

This has been chosen for my guide, dA's Guide to the Galaxy because it is superior in its category! You can find the guide in the links in my signature! Thank you! :D

Seriously, this and the "giving a critique" just made my day ^^
It is somewhat entertaining to actually read the different etiquette things for both part xD
Thanks a lot ^^
Hopefully most of my viewers know what they are doing ;) Though there were some exeptions ^^; lol ^^
I guess I will point those here ;P hehe ^^

I'm happy to have found your critiquing tutorials.

It gives me a better understanding to how critiquing and receiving critiques works.

This tutorial was really useful..though everyone sure made at some point the exact same mistakes :)

Very, very useful. Thanks! :)
tigi-si Featured By Owner Apr 29, 2008
You did a good job, pointing these things out. I totaly suck at giving and taking critique. So a nice tutorial is pretty helpful.

Thunder-Rainstripe Featured By Owner Apr 6, 2008
Oh gosh, I can't stand when people pull a #5 on me. =x

Thanks for making this! It's helpful and incredibly cute. =)

Snapesnogger should read this...
She takes critiques too personal... -___-

I get a critique of my work every Monday... (and I'm talking about real life here, not internet critiques XD)
I don't nag. I actually listen and try to improve.
It really makes me happy when I get critiques btw.
It makes me think people actually pay attention to my work. =D

Very funny,

The only time I think I made an excuse is when someone said I should have removed the swirls on a photograph...

Well I actually had a good, and funny reason for putting them there....

My littlest daughter was appalled that her panties were showing...:giggle:

I can see the Giving a critique one, but this one doesn't load.. it just shows a black screen when I click on full view. Any suggestions?
KurataSana Featured By Owner Aug 7, 2006
Great advice, I really appreciate that! Thanks a lot!
And your little drawings are really well done! :D
VolensVivarium Featured By Owner Jun 27, 2006
Even if I have never (surprisingly) been attacked for giving constructive criticism, I'm definitely holding on to this, just in case. You never know when an artist will freak out and misinterpret "you should work on your anatomy" for "your anatomy sucks, so go die".
liiga Featured By Owner Jun 27, 2006
:giggle: Nice way to put it. XD Glad you like the tut. ^^
Crystalia Featured By Owner Apr 11, 2006
I'll direct all my friends here =) Especially when they start sulking about the result of a critique XD
liiga Featured By Owner Apr 11, 2006
HapyCow Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
Ha, oops. Yeah I use the lazy excuse a lot..but I don't direct it to a specific critic, I usually just have that as part of the picture description. *guilty look* That's because I do get lazy whilst coloring a picture I'm not all that fond of. >.>

Very cute and useful! My favorite part has to be the picture of the artist all distracted by a butterfly while the critic is giving advice XD That's too funny.
liiga Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
Thanks! ^^ I think that's my personal favorite pic out of these as well. :D
In that point I was mostly referring to a situation where 1) the artist asks for a crit, 2) the critic gives it, 3) the artist goes 'pah i don't care'. Putting it in the description, I think, is waaaaaay more okay since since it isn't personal and warns folks ahead of time. (Although you will get some people thinking 'then why are you showing it?' ;))

Again, awesome.

liiga Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
Wonderful, thanks a lot! :)
black-rider Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
wow these are really helpful. I allways get peed when people try and crit me ... cause I never ask for it. most the time they tell me stuff I already know about the picture and other stuff. I never really thought of it as them taking the time to do it or anything ... most the time crit can sound really mean anyways.
liiga Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
I'm glad you find them useful! I'm not sure if it's on DA that you don't want people to crit your works, but if so, you can always mark it as 'critique discouraged' when you're submitting the image. By default it's set to welcome, which I notice is the most common setting in your gallery.
black-rider Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
I know but when I did change it to discouraged I had a load of confused people like "why do not want comments its a good picture?" ... so people didn't seem to know the difference between comment and crit ... which was annoying, cause I wanted people to comment so I stopped setting it to that.

I sued to have it discouraged on all my pictures but I stopped recently.
liiga Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
Ahh I see. Oh well. :shakefist: at the confused people!
black-rider Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
yeah but then I'll stop getting "wow your pictures bautiful. I love your style"
eresir Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
I think this will be helpfull for a lot of people here (including me ^^).
Really like it! and yay for the non-chibis :w00t: ^^
Millennium-Fox Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
D.A. should make these critique turorials you made more noticable; like when someone becomes a deviant.

Can't you recomend that?

(look at the non-chibis dance!)

Congrats!
liiga Featured By Owner Jan 20, 2006
Thanks! I'm flattered that you think so! I don't think I've heard of a way to suggest that though.
Spidergirl79 Featured By Owner Jan 18, 2006
This is so great, I love the chibis. Its good to read this for a lot of people so they can know how to have good DA ettiquite. (Sp?)

I can definitely relate to quite a few of those on that list. hehe. Great job in the presentations with these, I think they get the points across quite effectively with just that slight touch of humor. Good all around. :)
