I saw this while walking in a small town north of us with my wife during the Fourth of July weekend.
A picket fence (preferably white), was an iconic status - known as "Americana" - symbolizing an ideal suburban middle-class lifestyle, with a family and children, a modest house, and peaceful living. This stems from the fact that homes in quiet, middle-class neighborhoods often had front yard gardens enclosed with picket fences. Some felt that this idealism originated shortly after World War II resulting from the large influx of soldiers returning to the working society. There were stories - books even - written about this American stereotype.
