Kristina try to lay motionless on the bed. Around her, heart rate monitors beeped rhythmically. The room was dark, the lights turned off for bedtime, the only light coming from the hallway through the open door. She was exhausted but could not sleep. There was one thing getting in the way of her getting some well-deserved shut eye. Her belly. Kristina’s belly was an enormous mass on her abdomen, appearing large enough to contain a toddler, full term with triplets or more. Covered in sweat, she’d long abandoned her hospital gown, her womb naked and glistening on her lap, her bellybutton stretched flat on top of the enormous mound of flesh. She was so big now that she was unable to sit up on her own, needing the assistance of a nurse—sometimes two—in order to get her to sit upright.
