Description
So, here's my next contribution to the 10-click-madness collaboration, the topic this time was "sealcoat", as in the stuff that coats asphalt. But of course, a literal interpretation would have been way to boring, so I came up with this character concept
So, this is "Sealcoat". Originally a samurai from the 17th century, he became lost after his ship crashed near the coast of Russia while on a secret mission for the Japanese Emperor. He got stuck in the Siberian ice and was preserved over the centuries, frozen solid, yet still alive. Then the Tunguska event happened - The huge explosion caused shockwaves which made the ice break up and freed the samurai. Still weak and not adapted to the harsh climate, he surely would have died if he had not been accepted into a tribe of intelligent seals, who trained him in the secret ways of hunting and surviving in the merciless Siberian cold. He learned their ways for years, until the tribe got attacked by Russian hunters, who slaughtered most of the seals while the samurai was out hunting. Vowing revenge, the Japanese warrior made a coat out of his dead mentors, as it was tradition among the seals of Siberia. He preyed on the murderers of his tribe, turning the hunters into the hunted. Thus he became known as "Sealcoat", white ghost of the snow.
During the rise of Stalin, he was responsible for the liberaton of several Gulags, earning him the status as a hero of the people, though his actions probably were motivated by his hate for the Russian Federation.
Of course, there are some people who claim he just killed a bunch of seals and made up or fantasized the whole crazy story.
But no matter what the truth is - Word is that he's still out there in the Tundra, an unseen shadow in the snow, a glistering sword that swiftly cuts through injustice - The white samurai of the North.
Man, now I actually want to turn this into a comic
So the whole reason I suddenly turned to this faux-Japanese style was because I experimented with ink a bit lately, especially in combination with paint brushes. Turns out that it's not only useful for ink wash and that cool shading effect, but also gives the lines a nice Japanese flair when using pure ink. So yeah, parts are drawn with ink and brush, the details with dip pen, and I also used both my new red and blue ink. And I must say, I'm actually very happy with how it all turned out! Really doesn't happen often that I'm having so much fun while drawing

Did you know that Bear Grylls actually wore a seal skin as a coat to keep himself warm?
And btw, what do these japanese (or perhaps chinese) signs mean?
