Steampunk Aluna by LhuneArt Steampunk Aluna by LhuneArt
This was one of the first official pieces I did for S2Games :).

I think in my time working for them I have learned a lot about the human figure and I'm getting more and more confident drawing them, particularly women. I was quite proud of this piece when I finished it, though of course as with any piece of artwork that was made some time ago you spot more and more mistakes as you evolve further. However, I still quite like it for it's colors, the level of finish and the (for me) unusual subject matter and I feel this is, or was, a milestone in my development both technically and professionally :>.

Thanks for looking!

I'm not being an ass, but why is this not sexist when, say, Red Sonja is?

I know you're not being an ass by the way, neither am I trying to be. Just stating the way of things from my perspective. I've tried taking it up to the marketing and discussing whether it's possible to be a bit less biased with the audience they appeal to, but that was rebuffed quite ungraciously.

Who says this isn't? It's not my design, I'm just the illustrator that draws the pretty marketing pictures. If you think that just because I'm a woman in the industry I have a significant say in the matter, you are very unfortunately mistaken.

do you know I've seen MANY female pinup artists?

Nothing wrong with that. Pin-up is meant to look alluring. There is a pretty distinct difference between "sexy" and "sexualized".

I didn't wanna keep at it, lol, but I SERIOUSLY wanna know what your definition of sexualized is. What's the line? Is there a line? Lol. For instance, do you think Red Sonja is sexualized?

Sexualized is when a woman is made to look sexually appealing to men when that is not her actual role or intention. So yes, Red Sonja is sexualized in most cases because she is a warrioress. Pin up girls are not because that is the whole point. The line is really where the intent of the character is. You could say, for example, that a sexy looking female warrioress is simply embracing her sexuality, but that is a rather moot thing to say if she is designed by men and/or if it makes her attire completely nonsensical. A warrioress who has embraced her sexuality is still a warrioress first, and when her "personality trait" starts overriding that for appeal, it's sexualized.

I've seen a fair number of female artists who create busty skin-showing warrior amazonian women lol. I think my character Lu'thea is sexy, but her main identity is being a ranger. If you're curious lol here: theskaldofnvrwinter.deviantart… The nude versions are just me trying figure out her body shape. You'd think I'd know my now lol.

But I think there is nothing wrong with a sexualized character. If that's what the artist wants, that's what the artist gets. That's the way freedom works: even if you think something is in bad taste, a person gets to do it anyway.

Just because women do it too doesn't mean it's any less sexualized. It just means they probably know their audience and what they want to see.

I do think sexualization is bad. Not in and of itself perhaps, but the normality of it? The fact that it is more the standard than an exception bothers me. I'm not at all suggesting we restrict artists in what they depict, that would never work anyway. I can only hope that in a decade or so the industry as a whole will have grown up a bit and have moved away from this tired old design cliche.

Gorgeous! I'm actually one of the voice actors who voices for some of the characters in the game (Queen Serecta, Ven, Lightningbringer, and Penitent Lodestone), and trust me, you have no idea how awesome it makes the voiceovers feel to see character art in hi-res~

Though I didn't voice for this one, I was hoping to finally find his-res artwork of Steampunk Aluna, 'cause she looks soooo pretty in the banners~

It's good to know the art is appreciated, thanks!

Pretty cool that you've done the voice acting; is it like a side-job you do or is it what you actually specialize in?

Well, voice acting is my main thing, but it does require supplemental income, especially starting out. Like any other career in the arts! Tough, but fulfilling~

This is really nice! It's cool seeing this at this point in time, cause this is definitely a big jump from the work you'd been doing beforehand, but you've also very much improved with the more recent pieces you've done for them. Looks like it's been a really great project for you to work on!

Your figure drawing's definitely been getting more solid, and the perspective really shines on all armor and weaponry. Really cool design on the background too! Rockin' it like a boss!

Thanks so much Jon! It really means a lot coming from you, knowing that you've followed my process since the very beginning (remember NeonDragonArt, heh). We've both come a long way I think, you probably even more so than me! Your work for TAD has been stunning.
