Carpe Noctem - Chapter 2: Ashes to Ashes
At first glance, the city seemed unchanged. It was still the same sprawl of noise and smog and lights it had been for decades, but underneath something had changed subtly. Maybe it was the increased police presence, or perhaps the presence of other law enforcement officials, men and women who wore black uniforms with the rising sun of Decker Corp emblazoned above the left breast.
Billboards scattered throughout the city announced Decker Corp as bringing "New Hope to New Prospect", displaying images of Decker Security officers, smiling citizens, and other shining examples of false advertising.
An electronic news feed on the side of a bank scrolled the daily headlines, flashing brief tales of gang violence against the impressive skyline, dominated by the massive building housing Decker Corporation's headquarters.
At its heart, however, the city was the same as it had always been; loud, dirty, vital, alive. Every bright corner, every dark alley, every busy street still hummed with the sam

Carpe Noctem - Chapter 1: Anniversary
New Prospect, Massachusetts
Five years later

The police tape was still up, cordoning off the ruins of the stadium. It was faded and frayed with time and weather, and it had been broken by teenagers looking for a secluded place to drink and smoke, or by transients looking for shelter from the elements.
There was fresh graffiti on the walls, some of it ordinary tags and scribbles, but a lot of it was slightly different. There were names and dates, the casualties of the fighting that was spreading up and down the east coast. There were the usual "fuck fangs" and "don't feed on me", scrawled or sprayed in a variety of styles. The vampiric answer to this was nowhere to be seen.
The woman who stood on the sidewalk staring at the ruined building with an unreadable expression on her face. She looked young, maybe in her late twenties, average height, with light brown hair that fell in soft waves to her shoulders. She was attractive, with thick-lashed brown eyes and a nose that was slig

Carpe Noctem - Prologue
St. George, Colorado
Five Years Ago

The phone rang, but she didn't think anything of it. It was probably Dan, calling to ask if he could keep the kids another day. She would tell him no, of course, and he would argue, and she would remind him--politely--about the terms of their divorce: He had the boys every other weekend during the school year, every other week in the summer. It wasn't so difficult to comprehend, unless you were Dan Scott.
Jen sighed, shoving the frying pan into the sink full of soapy water, waiting for the call to go to voicemail. It didn't; after a short pause, the phone just started ringing again. Jen frowned, dried off her hands, and walked over to the wall phone, glancing at the caller ID.
She didn't recognize the number or the area code, but she answered anyway, frowning slightly. "Hello, Scott residence, Jen speaking. Who is this?"
"Jen..." The man on the other end sounded both exhausted and relieved. "It's Martin Gale. You probably don't remember me,

The watch hadn't worked in years.
The casing was scratched and dented, pockmarked like a small brass moon hung on a broken chain. He held the watch up in front of his eyes, watching it sway slightly back and forth. After a moment he spoke, his voice was quiet and even. His eyes never wavered from the watch.
"This was my great-grandfather's," he said. "My great-great grandmother gave it to him for his 18th birthday, and he enlisted three days later. He survived the war and returned home to become a successful farmer. He owned over seventy acres of land when he died, right after my grandfather came of age. Car accident."
He set the watch swaying again, as though trying to hypnotize himself, bring the memories to the forefront. The jukebox started playing a nameless jazz piece, accompanied by the clink of glasses at the bar.
The other man sat in silence still, his dark eyes unblinking. He was still as a statue, impassive and cold. He was young, not yet out of his teens, but with eyes that

Three Days Later
"And then," Bram announced in a triumphant whisper, "I carried both of 'em out of the Amphitheatre before it collapsed." He glanced down at the cards in his hand, the light from the small battery powered lantern casting deep shadows on his face. "Got any fives?"
The woman seated across from him shook her head. "Nyet. Go fish."  She rearranged the cards in her hand and then continued, "Gale says he helped you carry the girl. I am beginning to think you are… how you say, full of shit."
"Gale says a lot of things," Bram began, a little too loudly, and then added more quietly, "I'm more trustworthy than he is. "And sister, you have no idea how full of shit I am."
Alina felt eyes watching her, and glanced around the dark apartment. The other two occupants were asleep on the other side of the room; the girl was still unconscious on the couch and Gale had fallen asleep in the chair beside it.
Bram cleared his throat conspicuously. "You trying to read m

Bram surveyed the hallway, stepping over the still-steaming remains of the vampires who until moments ago had been trying to kill all of them. He nodded appreciatively, and then pumped his fist in the air. "And Bram said, 'Let there be death,'" he pronounced, "and there was death. And Bram looked upon the death and saw that it was GOOD!"
He saw that the half-dozen wolves accompanying him had finished dispatching the last stragglers, and grinned. This was more fun than he'd thought it would be.
Out on the field, the battle was still raging on. The once-green turf was now almost entirely red; it wasn't a battle so much as a massacre. They'd caught the fangy bastards completely unprepared, and virtually unarmed. If they'd been in the Decker building, things might have gone differently, but here in the stadium…
Bram turned to the kid next to him, the odd one they'd picked up during the run through the city on the way downtown. They'd picked up a lot of extras that way, but

Matt woke at 7:30 am to the sound of pots and pans clattering in his kitchen. He pulled the pillow over his head and groaned, wondering why his roommate was up at Ridiculous O'clock in the morning.
Then he remembered that he didn't have a roommate, and that work him up immediately.
His hand closed around the battered wooden baseball bat he kept next to the bed, a holdover from his post-college days when he lived in the seediest possible apartment. Some things never changed.
Bat in hand, he crept towards the bedroom door and eased it open, praying that it wouldn't creak. Why had he never WD40'd the hinges? Why did he put these things off?
Placing his feet precisely to avoid making the ancient floorboards creak, he made his way to the kitchen. I, he thought, am a goddamn ninja.
He poked his head around the doorway, ready to hit a homerun with some burglar's head. Then he stopped.
There was a girl in his kitchen.  That alone was enough to cause the mother of all do

She sat down on the chair, folding her legs and laying her hands in her lap. Everything about her was annoying him to no end, and he wanted to be done with her. Unfortunately, that wouldn't be happening any time soon.
"Jack, right?" She pressed, patting her perfectly smooth hair.
"Collin or Mr. Collin to you." He replied bluntly. "But you can call me absolutely nothing at the moment. I need perfect silence." He returned his attention to the box on the table. He really didn't need absolute silence; after all, he wasn't an amateur and this wasn't Hollywood. He could probably open the thing with explosions, 'Pomp and Circumstance', and screaming teenagers in the background.
Come to think of it, he had worked under those exact circumstances at his niece's graduation two years ago. Only then, it had been a bigger box with lots of money inside. Now, it was a tiny thing about the size and thickness of a laptop, and he had no idea what the payoff would be, if there would be any at all.

The Mission
There was a grim smile on his face as he studied the complicated machinery controlled by the rubber-handled lever clutched in his sweaty fist. There was a lot riding on him, and he knew it. Anyone else would have lost their cool in a situation like this, but he remained calm and kept his hand steady as he guided the apparatus towards the target.
He kept his breathing steady and moved slowly, not letting himself become distracted by the rhythmically flashing lights and the tense crowd of hushed people gathered around him. His free hand left a smear of sweat on the black plastic of the console as he maneuvered the device directly over the target with a few deft motions. His finger hovered over the gleaming red button that would initiate the retrieval sequence, but he paused to assess the situation.
Many others like him had reached this crucial point and then failed because of a fatal misjudgment of height or positioning. This was the point of no return, the point at which he must make hi

9 spoilery thoughts on Angels Take Manhattan
Seriously- spoilers.  Don't read ahead if you haven't seen it.
Okay....
1. When did Angels stop having to not look at each other?  And why?
2. Will the 12th Doctor have a bad wrist that acts up?  Or will he/she just be generally kind of "undercooked"?
3. The (underused) real NYC locations looked great.
4. One observation from my girlfriend here: In a city of 7 million people (I checked the 1930s population stats, folks), the Statue of Liberty is probably the most constantly-observed statue in history.  Getting off its pedestal on Ellis Island would be a challenge.  To say nothing of how many people might pay extra attention if it's walking around Manhattan.  Or is the answer that David Copperfield is in a secret alliance with the angels??? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAEw-gtDkO4
5. River was less annoying/smug than usual- almost back to her likeable SILENCE IN THE LIBRARY self (appropriately enough).  I guess she
