Carpe Noctem - Chapter 2: Ashes to Ashes

At first glance, the city seemed unchanged. It was still the same sprawl of noise and smog and lights it had been for decades, but underneath something had changed subtly. Maybe it was the increased police presence, or perhaps the presence of other law enforcement officials, men and women who wore black uniforms with the rising sun of Decker Corp emblazoned above the left breast. Billboards scattered throughout the city announced Decker Corp as bringing "New Hope to New Prospect", displaying images of Decker Security officers, smiling citizens, and other shining examples of false advertising. There were names and dates, the casualties of the fighting that was spreading up and down the east coast. Bram surveyed the hallway, stepping over the still-steaming remains of the vampires who until moments ago had been trying to kill all of them. He nodded appreciatively, and then pumped his fist in the air. "And Bram said, 'Let there be death,'" he pronounced, "and there was death. And Bram looked upon the death and saw that it was GOOD!"   He saw that the half-dozen wolves accompanying him had finished dispatching the last stragglers, and grinned. This was more fun than he'd thought it would be. Out on the field, the battle was still raging on. The once-green turf was now almost entirely red; it wasn't a battle so much as a massac

Matt woke at 7:30 am to the sound of pots and pans clattering in his kitchen. He pulled the pillow over his head and groaned, wondering why his roommate was up at Ridiculous O'clock in the morning. Then he remembered that he didn't have a roommate, and that work him up immediately. His hand closed around the battered wooden baseball bat he kept next to the bed, a holdover from his post-college days when he lived in the seediest possible apartment. Some things never changed. Bat in hand, he crept towards the bedroom door and eased it open, praying that it wouldn't creak. Why had he never WD40'd the hinges? Why did he put these things off?

Voices echoed dimly in the black void, tugging at the edges of her awareness, urging her to wake, to move. She resisted their pull, blinking at the hazy light. When she finally awoke completely, she knew nothing at all. Her mind was blank. Everything in her head was fuzzy and strange. Thoughts, images, and sounds all flashed though her brain at light speed, but she couldn't grasp any of them and make them hold still long enough to look at. She tried to think of something, anything, even her name, but there was nothing there. She looked around, her vision slowly starting to clear, and tried to bring some semblance of sense back into the wor

She spun around to face him, bracing herself with one hand on the dashboard to avoid flying through the windshield. The truck had no seatbelt on the passenger side. "How the hell do you know my name?" If that even was her name. Still… Gwen was as good a name as any, and she needed one. It might as well be hers, for the time being, at least. Bram held up his hands in a gesture that was obviously meant to be reassuring, but all it really accomplished was to make his already horrible driving that much worse. With a grimace, he clutched the wheel and spun it as far to the right as it would go, sending them screeching around the corner. "Co

Bram Walker, or Abraham to people who didn't know him well enough to not risk pissing him off by using his full name, paced back and forth in the torn-up bathroom, holding his mobile phone above his head and praying to the Signal Gods that the little bars in the corner would start going up soon so that he could make arrangements. Martin wasn't going to appreciate this one bit. He and Bram went back quite a ways, and yet Bram never knew when or if Martin would be willing to talk to him. He also suspected that this was his fault, even though he hadn't meant any of it. He wasn't a bad person, he just forgot things sometimes. Things like laws o

Out on the street, Gwen stopped in front of the battered tan pickup truck that had been their ride to the Safehouse, but Bram shook his head and kept walking. "How come we aren't driving?" Gwen asked, looking at the truck with longing. He couldn't be serious about walking, but maybe he had other transportation somewhere. "You said your friend's place was all the way on the East Side…that's a long way to walk!" "Yeah, well. It isn't my truck." He tossed the keys up onto the vehicle's dented hood, giving the smashed front bumper a kick for good measure. It fell off into the street with a clatter, and he backed away quickly, continuing do

One Week Later At first, Gwen had been worried that Martin follow up on his threat to kick her out after the first night. But after one day became two and the days added up into weeks with still no word from him on the subject, she began to relax a little and started settling in to her new life. And part of her new life apparently involved sharp things. The table was covered with a wide range of sharp, metallic objects, and firearms. Alongside them were a half-eaten sandwich, the remains of a coffee-stained newspaper, and an ashtray full of cigarette butts. "This," Bram said, putting out his most recent cigarette in the overstuffed ashtr

The night air was crisp, and wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't for the sharp wind that seemed to cut straight through clothing; another stone-shatteringly cold Massachusetts winter was on its way. The sun had almost disappeared behind the tall buildings of downtown New Prospect, and if Martin had a choice, he'd be inside where it was warm, not standing outside shivering and jumping at every little noise. Bram stood beside him, smoking like a chimney. He was on his fourth cigarette; Martin could tell he was nervous. He only chain smoked when he was nervous. "I'm thinking about heading down to the bar," Bram said, breaking the long silenc

"Remind me again," Gwen said, hopping over a puddle of slush on the sidewalk and catching up to Bram, her boots sending up chunks of half-melted, dirty snow. "Why we're going to a bar." Bram gave her a decidedly unpleasant grin, shoving his hands into the pockets of his coat. "'Cause I want a drink," he said, "And 'because there's someone I want you to meet." "Who would I meet at a bar?" Gwen muttered. "I mean, beside drunks." "This is a different kind of bar altogether," Bram said slyly. "And this lady I'm taking you to see is an old friend of mine. She might be able to help you figure out what's going on." The last part caught Gwen's at

When they arrived home, Gwen was at the very farthest end of her tether. She was a little impressed and surprised by her ability to not shoot Bram with his own gun, especially when, on the city bus, he'd started telling her obviously made-up stories about the American Civil War, which he claimed to have witnessed. She blamed it on the fact that 'Glory' had been showing on HBO the night before, which Bram had somehow hijacked from the tenant upstairs. It was astounding; the man couldn't figure out how to use the answering machine, but he'd been able to get illegal cable effortlessly. She arrived at the front door of Martin's apartment buildin

Gwen woke up to the sound of someone in the kitchen rattling dishes. She rubbed her eyes and sat up, frowning at the disturbance. Martin was nowhere to be seen, and Bram was in the kitchen hunting for something reasonably clean to put his toast on. "Morning," Gwen muttered with a yawn, pushing her tangled hair out of her face. Bram scowled back at her, squinting at the pile of dishes through bloodshot eyes. "Shh," He groaned, pressing a hand to the side of his head. "Hangover. Please, no noise." He promptly broke his own rule, and added, "Thanks for leaving me passed out in the middle of the fucking hallway too, by the way." Gwen flinched.

CotN Ch. 10: Immortality

David had agreed to meet them back at Martin's apartment rather than take the bus. This frustrated Gwen more than a little, because it meant she had to wait that much longer to get her questions answered. At the top of the list were two very big ones, namely what on earth David actually was, and how he and Gwen had met in the past she couldn't remember. She had a couple theories about the first question, but absolutely none about the second one. Martin had referred to David as a 'half-breed', but half what? Half human and half bat-person? It was kind of cool, yes, but also a little bit creepy. That reminded her of one more question to add t

I am alive and well and in Germany. Yes, I started the Children of the Night sequel. I have a notebook and a word document full of random scenes that just need to be stitched together. I have so many ideas, most of them depressing and/or violent. I have found my muse, and it is Guinness. Or something. I wrote this chapter with the help of three bottles and with absolutely no help from that bastard spell-check. We haven't been speaking. I had to write this whole thing in Word Pad because Microsoft Word and I aren't speaking either. UNRELATED. ANYWAY GUYS. I think everyone should live in Europe. That is all.
