i think they're probably more like the life trio, because xerneas is life and yveltal is death, and zygarde is the balance

also, I wonder why zygarde’s other forms came out in gen 7 and not gen 6?

I think it was more to do with the fact that a third kalos game never came out, so they put zygarde’s other forms in gen 7 instead. same with magearna

i usually just make custom colours based on what i can see. sometimes i just use the colours from the sugimori art or the dream art then i tweak it a bit to work for sprite colourations 
although if you're making older generation sprites, you don't have to be too exact with the colours
