Pixar's new movie, Coco will come out in the US in just a few days, and continuing from where I left off in explaining the symbolism you might see, I wanted to make a new piece, now about why the hairless dog, Dante, is more important than it seems, and why it can travel to the Land of the Dead so easily. It has to do with how in Aztec mythology, the Xolo dog was revered as a guide to lost souls to help them through the many trials to reach the Land of the Dead. It's become such a symbol, that in Altars of the Dead in Mexico, we put imagery of a Xolo dogs next to our dead ancestors.

So... you're dead, and you must now begin a journey to reach the Land of the Dead, or as it was known in Aztec mythology, Mictlán. The souls of your ancestors await for you to join them and become part of a new existence. Your journey will take you through many challenges you must face, nine in total, and only overcoming them will you be worthy of the transition to Mictlán.
You will first find yourself in Itzcuintlan, a land where your first view will be the Apanohuacalhuia river, and at the other side of it you will see a mountain split in half with a narrow passage inbetween. In the shores of the river you will meet a dog, a very strange dog with no fur that you must follow no matter what.
The dog is a Xoloizcuintle, a servant of Xolotl, who once was a lord of the morning sun, but now has chosen his dog to lead you through your first challenge: To cross the river.
It should not be too hard to cross with the help of the Xoloizcuintle, but beware if you have ever mistreated a dog in life, for they remember everything you do to them, and if they don't like you, they will let you drown in the dark waters of Apanohuacalhuia, where your soul will weep in laments for eternity, banned forever from entering Mictlán.
