No Helping Hand
He laughed at their folly
Every time he got his way
And when they all might suffer,
He just shrugged and walked away.
Poisoned water
Poisoned air
He sent them off
And left them to despair.
Little did he know
That he drunk from the same pool.
He is better than no other
And will drown in poison too.
Ailing bodies,
Lack of care.
Printed numbers
Never added up to life.
Little did he know
That his neighbor's ill would catch.
His body just as vulnerable,
He finally understands.
But he led them,
Raised machines.
Too deep did they cut.
Too much did their home bleed.
Little did he know
There was nowhere else to go
That the planets aren't for sale
And he could drain his own.
He refused them
Let them die,
Never shamed
To hear them cry.
Little did he know
Just how much he'd understand
When his actions came upon him
And there was no helping hand.
Too late he realized
That he'd suffocate
With the masses he ignored
And join them in their fate.

Prevail
Often, when hope recedes from our view
To be replaced by a heavy darkness,
We are fooled into thinking it gone.
But take heart,
Because the light yet out of sight
Will by greater measure fill our lives.
Reaching it may not be simple,
But life was never meant to be so.
Guard in mind your value,
Strive to bring it forth
To be grown and shared.
And you shall prevail.
Life will knock you to your knees-
There is no doubt of that.
But when you rise
And regain perspective
You shall prevail.

All That You Left Behind
I survived
And you did not.
How to comprehend?
When I think of all that you've missed,
All that I chose,
All that you gave up,
All that you left behind,
That is the hardest.
Today as I watch the day's end,
I know how much I am alive.
And I think of you,
The colors you lost,
The life.
You will miss so much more:
Friends you would have made,
Love you would have had,
A sister who might only have grown closer.
And your love,
Once your partnered dove,
Left to heal the wounds,
Asked to be happy.
Beautiful soul,
Gifted mind,
Loving heart,
Why did you leave us?
We ask so many times,
Never expecting an answer.
We ask not with reason,
But cry out with the heart.
When I think of how many sunsets you've missed,
What you've left behind,
The people you brought together,
The love you created before you left,
I am grateful to have been touched by your life.
If only I had known how lost you truly were,
Maybe then you would not be gone.
But I was helpless as all,
As you were determined.
I wish you could

Only a Dream
It was only a dream, they say.
If they only knew what he's seen,
Where he's been tonight,
Without ever opening his eyes,
Perhaps they would not say such things.
But they do not know-
How could they?
He cannot ask them to understand,
Any more than he does himself,
Until it surfaces in this world,
Or even then.

War
Cadence of boots.
Hearts beat as one.
Oil in barrels.
Ground soaked with blood.
Numbing my mind.
Removing me.
They've taken my name.
Erased my face.
I am a pawn.
They see me not.
Bigger games played
With living toys.
Can't they recall
This goes nowhere?
Remembered or not
History stays.
Now comes our turn
To fulfill it.
Our souls and bodies
Numbers tallied.
Devalued so,
The worst of crimes.
Against what's left
Of humanity.

Wayward Stars
We write our fears,
Speak them out,
So that we can comprehend
Almost as though when we write them down,
When we feel them,
We can prevent them from happening
Or understand them,
Come to grips with reality.
We write our hopes
So that they might blossom,
Without light or immediate prospects
Almost as though when we write them down,
The passing dreams become our own.
They gain power,
Or perhaps we do,
Seeing what we can achieve.
We catch wayward stars
And befriend them,
Adding to our own shine.

In Love With Life
I have fallen,
Completely and irrevocably,
In love
With Life.
It swirls about me,
Embraces me,
Fills me anew
With Life.
It frees me,
Touches my heart,
Sings to me
Of beauty.
It shows me the world
As is and can be,
Gives to me a kiss
Of wind.
Its colors love,
Its warm hum a hymn.
Sound and light
Unite.
Its gives me choice,
Renews strength and will,
Guides my path,
And frees.
It grants safety,
Welcomes me in dance,
Visits me
In waves.
It brings me peace,
Lets me love
Without condition,
Reminds me.
It keeps balance,
Wakes and lulls me alike;
And I live
With Life.

Wildflowers
Wildflowers grow here,
Of a sort that I have not before seen,
Let to flourish in this environment.
Wildflowers grow here,
Spring from between the blades like song,
Peer from within the trellis where they grow,
Unafraid to show their lovely faces.
Wildflowers grow here,
So unique in beauty and form,
And fearing not prying eyes to deem weeds
Or seeking hands to possess.
Wildflowers grow here,
Which elsewhere would not be emboldened,
Or else might have lost that courage,
To with such a light enter and gift this world.

Flight
I am in a field alone,
Surrounded on all sides by softly swaying grass
And the sweet scent of wildflowers that thrive here.
The ground is cool beneath my bare feet
And the tall grasses gently tickle my legs where my shorts leave skin uncovered.
Beautifully bright pinks and blues interrupt the swaying landscape
And creamy yellows reflect the sunny day's smile.
Close to me there are fiery orange bursts,
Proudly enjoying the brightest sunshine in the center of the field.
Violet turrets peak out from below the reeds in places,
Towards the edge of the meadow where trees begin to grow close together.
To my left is a glittering ribbon that winds its way
Into the heart of this colorful world, before rambling off into the wood.
A sudden breeze comes to play,
Lifts my hair,  billows my clothes,
Inviting me to come join it in the azure sky.
Smiling I spread my wings,
Relishing the feeling of the cool breeze ruffling the feathers at their tips.
I run to a small rise in the earth
And launch my

Time
Does Time exist without consciousness?
Can it be without someone to keep watch,
Someone to create and continue it?
Is it a being all its own,
Or an integral part of the fabric of the universe,
Holding all together?
As humans, can we own or command it?
Or do we simply ride it like waves?

Lost Friend
I want to talk to you.
You need it.
But the smoke on your mind
And that poison you drink from a can
Soak your brain,
Absorb you.
You slowly destroy
Someone I loved.
And the only time I can see him now
Is when I ask a question
That you would once have answered
A different way.
Are you still there?
And can I be good enough
To care?
You doubt me as well as you,
And at this point,
So do I.

Mother Earth
How many names did you have?
How many beings were you,
Before the storm?
They came.
They razed.  They stole.
How rich were you then?
How peaceful,
Before the hate?
They killed.
They destroyed your life.
How many loved upon you?
How many sought a future,
Before their bitter end?
They dominated.
Yet, all suffered for it.
How could they do it?
And how could you,
How can you still,
Remain so patient?
They took all.
They left your body scarred,
Yet you fed them.
Never did you lose your love
And you feed them still.

Home Like a Canvas
She uses her body like a canvas.
Why, she says, should I paint on walls?
I will move away from them one day,
Leave them behind.
And to design on such temporal things
Acknowledges the temporality of her art,
A surrender to time.
Her body she will take with her
Wherever she goes,
A more practical medium.
Its familiar dents and quirks,
Vibrant images as ink against nothingness,
Are a comfort and a home.
A permanence in the face of mortality.
