Things They'll Never Say - Part One

Cloaked

Zarra grasped the cloak tight around her neck. The air was still and balmy in the diminishing light of the evening, but she felt a chill nonetheless. All the sleepless nights, all the preparations, had led to this one event. No more stalling, no more excuses.  After tonight, her world would be changed forever. She breathed deep in the shadows of the chapel, as if the simple act would calm her. Beside her, Therok appeared bored. Twice her size and tattooed from his neck to his ankles, he carried the air of someone who had done all of this before, despite what the reality was.  At'Kel was across the street, invisible in the

Despite the fact that he had lived his entire life in the South Pole, Sokka's favourite time of year was summer in the Earth Kingdom.  There was something about the air during the summer in the outskirts of Ba Sing Se.  Not too hot, and the breeze was refreshing and cooling without bringing a chill with it.  The war had been over for seven years and peace was the norm.  Sure, there were the occasional rebel uprisings that had to be quelled, but for the most part, his life was good. On that particular afternoon in late summer, Sokka sat in the grass, leaning back on his elbows, watching the few clouds i

My Muse

I sat at my desk, staring at the computer.  The blank white screen of my word processing program stared back, mocking me. I ripped the glasses off my face and threw them on the desk.  Twelve hours before I had to have this story to my editor, and I hadn't written so much as a word, never mind the fifteen pages I was contracted for.  Another extension was out of the question; I'd had two already.  If this wasn't ready in the morning, I wasn't getting paid. I reached for my tea cup.  Empty.  Figures. Out of desperation, I popped the used teabag in my mouth and stared sucking on it.&

What Would be Missed: Tokka

There was no mystery behind the fact that Sokka couldn't sleep.  In less than a day, he and his friends – no, his family – were going to be in the fight of their lives, and the war that had ravaged the world for a hundred years would be decided one way or another.  He walked around the edge of the White Lotus' camp, checking that everyone was sleeping and safe.   Satisfied that everyone was alright, the last place he checked was Toph's earth tent.  He crouched down to peer inside, and panicked when he saw it was empty.  His eyes scanned the camp, desperate for any sign of her. After the Ambush: Tokka

...there's nothing else I can do... ...will never walk again... ...lucky to be alive... ...my son... ...can you hear me... He floated in nothingness.  Words were spoken by disembodied voices.  Light shone all around.  It was warm and inviting and he was part of it.  He was the light.  He was free. A touch ghosted across his arm.  He was being pulled down, away from the light, back to the voices.  He tried to fight.  He tried to get away.  He tried to fly. He failed.   He sank into the world of noise and darkness. ***** When Sokka rega

"Aren't you finished yet?" "Stop talking." An eyebrow arched.  "Excuse me?" "If you don't stay still, I'm going to mess this up." "Why did I let you talk me into this?" Sokka dipped two fingers into the bowl of white paint.  "Because you know it's a good idea.  Now I'm almost done, so stop talking for a couple more minutes, okay?"  He brought his fingertips to Toph's chin, making sure to cover every bit of her pale skin.  "We need camouflage, and this war paint does the job beautifully." "This makeup had better work," she mumbled. "War.  Paint." "Whatever." Sokka set the bow

Tokka Week Four - Sympathy

Sokka didn't know why or how he'd ended up on the floor, but he was grateful.  The floor mean stability; the floor meant he couldn't fall. A moan from across the room forced him to raise his head – it was his natural curiosity.  He cracked open a single eyelid and saw Toph sitting in a chair, her head between her knees. "I am never doing that again." Sokka wanted to agree with her, but someone had evidently stolen every drop of moisture from his mouth. "There's water over there," she said, waving a limp hand to the table.  He loved that she always seemed to read his mind. He crawled across the room, not trusting himself to stand.  W

Tokka Week Four - Boomerang

Sokka paced in front of his new prospective soldier.  A set of green eyes looked up at him with reverence and awe. "Today," he began, "I am going to introduce you to the single most important weapon you will ever learn to use.  It's more important than a sword, more versatile than bending, and, most importantly, will always come back to you."  He unsheathed his weapon and held it at arm's length. "This is your boomerang." The soldier grinned at him.  "You are right to be enamoured of it."  He tilted the weapon to allow the light to catch it at all angles.  "No other weapon in the world can match the versatility of the boomerang.  You throw

Tokka Week Four - Moonlight

Tokka Week Four – Moonlight Toph stood in the middle of the Northern Water Tribe's Spirit Oasis with her head lifted to the sky.  She didn't even know if she was facing the right direction – moonlight didn't give off heat like sunlight did – but for her purposes, it really didn't matter.  She was going to have her say. "Hey, Yue.  I'm Toph, but you probably already know that.  You must know a lot, being a spirit and all.  And you most likely already know what I'm going to say, but I guess I'm going to say it anyway." She cleared her throat before continuing.  "Sokka told me about you once.  Told me how beautiful you were, ho

The Quest: Prologue

Prologue The children sat around her, all of them edging forward on their knees.  "Tell us a story, Granny!" The Bard looked at each of their little faces.  Seven sets of eyes look back, full of anticipation.  "A story?" she said, a wry smile on her lips.  "Well then, let's see.  What kind of story do you want to hear today?" "Something funny!" one boy shouted. "Something scary!" yelled another. "I want to hear a love story!" said a girl. Seven voices cried out in unison at this, boys protesting, girls agreeing. The Bard loved telling stories to children.  They weren't yet jaded.  Unlike adults, were always eager for more, and believed

Heart of the Warrior - Chap. 1

The two figures moved among the shadows of the night, seen by none but the moon and the stars. The taller one led, silently picking his way through the trees, looking for the best place to see, yet not be seen.  The shorter one followed, barefoot, waiting for his signal. The leader put his back against a tree and gave a soft whistle to the other.  She crouched low, almost crawling to meet him.  He looked over his shoulder into the clearing beyond.  There was a small group of men there, quietly mulling around a cluster of tents.  They all seemed to be settling down for the night. “How m
