American lion vs Smilodon populator by Leogon American lion vs Smilodon populator by Leogon
Well,well well...
It's the beginning of a clash, still no bloodshed, but "There will be blood"!the two giants were both extremely territorial, both the same size and both fierce enough to win this battle. What's your idea about the winner of this war?:-)
The majestic Panthera atrox or the mighty Smilodon populator?

The Smilo would win because it is closer to a Grevy's zebra in size and is on par to a bear in power.

The species name was atrox? That's interesting because the Western Diamondback rattlesnake is Crotalus atrox.

No evidence. However, if we consider them a sister taxa to Eurasian cave lions,Probably they wouldn't have mane.

Not only them,Asiatic Lions too, have manes.Other cats though, may have ruffs rather than manes, like what we see in tigers and lynxes.

I read that cave lions on cave paintings rather doesn't have large manes. How are called tigers and lions in Farsi?

In old persian, the tiger was called تیغر "Tighr" but in modern persian we use ببر "Babr".but the lion is شیر "Sheer" for us.Tigers and lions used to inhabit Northern and Southwestern regions of Iran until 50's.But they are no more around. It's a pity...

And yeah,The cave paintings show no mane.:-)

The lion, as its bite wouldn't require the precision the smilodons would.

Actually, believe it or not, the African plains lion has a similar, albeit less noticeable, pattern on its coat.  It's more noticeable on the coat of the cubs where the spots and stripes are more visible.

As to your question, Leogon, neither would win because a human would come along and kill both of the with his rifle to have a trophy to hang on the side of his teepee.  Oh, wait a minute, this battle probably took place before humans arrived in North America.  Eh!  The "humans caused all extinctions that ever occurred" crowd wouldn't care about facts so neither will I.  LOL.

All facetiousness aside, I vote the American lion would win due to the fact that its canines are round versus the blade-like shape of the Smilodon's canines.  Round canines can take much more stress without breaking than thin canines can.  The only way that the Smilodon would win this little fight would be if the lion is inexperienced in fighting and makes the mistake of coming too close and staying too near the Smilodon thereby allowing the Smilodon to pin it to the ground where its canines can do the necessary damage to kill the lion.
