Iron Ground
We are born with a hunger for stars in our hands,
But we wake to the cold and the drift of the sands.
We had built up our heavens on promise and trust,
Just to watch them descend to the silence of dust.
It is not a defeat when the temples collapse,
And our fortresses fade into blank spaces on maps.
For the grandest illusion is thinner than air,
And the truth of the earth is what rescues us there.
We must shed what we hoped for to see what is real,
In the scrape of the stone and the bite of the steel.
Though the fall is a shatter, the waking is clear—
We are done with the shadow, and final-ly here.
