Retro Welcome Light

Fractals are geometric figures that stand out for their unique properties. Unlike traditional shapes such as cubes or circles, they are self-similar. This means that they retain their structure at any scale. You may have seen those hypnotic videos where an image seems to repeat itself endlessly. That is the essence of fractals: infinitely nested levels within a finite structure. This mathematical concept, discovered by Benoît Mandelbrot, helps explain shapes that defy our intuitive understanding.

Structure: how do fractals work?

Fractals work on the principle of self-similarity. For example: the human blood vessel network. If all the vessels were lined up end to end, they would reach nearly 100,000 km, more than twice the circumference of the Earth. Yet they fit within the limited volume of the human body. This organization is due to the fractal dimension of the network. In nature, these structures emerge naturally, but recreating them requires precise calculations. Computers, using algorithms based on recurrence, can easily generate these complex shapes. This technique has even revolutionized animation, allowing films such as Toy Story to achieve incredibly accurate landscapes.

Why do we see fractal geometries in nature?

Fractal geometries appear in nature because they allow for optimal organization. Trees, for example, adopt a fractal structure: each branch divides into smaller branches, creating a pattern that repeats itself all the way to their tips. This repetition maximizes their surface area for capturing light. We find this principle in Romanesco broccoli, where each small part reproduces the overall shape. Fractals are also found in natural phenomena such as snowflakes or rivers, which form fractals through their complex network of branches. These patterns are not the result of chance, but a precise response to the constraints encountered in the environment.

Example: what are some famous fractals?

Some fractals have become iconic. One example is the Mandelbrot set, which fascinates with its infinite complexity. It is often represented by infinite zooms that reveal ever richer details. The Sierpinski triangle, with its repetition of triangles within triangles, is another famous example. The Koch snowflake is also an example of a repetitive structure. Each segment is replaced by a pointed curve, creating an infinite surface in a limited space. These mathematical figures inspire scientists, artists, and engineers alike, who play with their beauty and great mathematical complexity.

Good morning all, We can now play the game of 7 errors, Or 100,000 different pixels between his two fractal photos. The one on the left is the original version and the one on the right is the pixelated version (ie significant changes to the pixels, shaped by hand or earlier with the mouse). Unfortunately these files are reduced to a size which allows me to post them on the site. Original size of this painting is 7997 x 5331 pixels (16 million colors). Good day to you.
