Amazing work! Could you tell me how strong the clay is once fired?
Reply
:iconldn-rdnt:
LDN-RDNT Featured By Owner Mar 29, 2010  Professional General Artist
thank you.
polymer clay when baked (not fired) hardens almost like ceramic. depending on the details and structure, it should be chip resistant. quite tough actually.

What sort of class would I want to take to learn how to do something like this? I have the painting skills, but sculpture is not my strongest (Yet XD)

hmmm... basic sculpting class should do, then its up to you where to take it i guess. lots of sculptures r self-taught. but u have the painting skills and that is a great advantage. you can also find on-line tutorials which i think is sufficient enough to inspire you. and if ur that passionate and patient to learn then you will be ok.

i did actually sell 'Blackie' for an art and craft show here in sydney, but ive grewn attached to it.

anyway, once i have learned more of casting, then i might think of doing more sculptures for casting and sell them.

How did you get that to stand? Chicken wire?

almaloy armature wires are used for main structure, then thickened by crampled aluminium foil. :)

never heard of the wire before. o.O It expensive?

its not really expensive, i think armature wires are generic. its similar to aluminium wires (actually feels like the same). you can use copper wires too.

Ah. Cool. I'll have to try sculpting something sometime if I ever find someplace that sells that stuff and clay.

its easy to find them. super sculpey(polymer clay) can be bought art shops or browse the web for 'Super sculpey' or sculpey, its very popular.
armature wires can be found in art supply stores, or perhaps a hardware store, or a moulding and casting supply store.
