A Study in Paper No. 6: On the Town

Sherlock and John out for a quiet stroll on a crisp snowy evening.

I love paper sculptures and I love shadow boxes, so it was inevitable that at some point the two should merge.

Made from cardstock, cut as a single piece and then folded, no adhesives. It measures 9cm x 15cm x 6cm, give or take a few mm.

I like how you used all the sides to cut the different parts out of. Its cool to see the moon and the hole left by the moon. The lantern and the window are cool details. How did you learn to do paper cutting?

Thanks very much, the moon and lamp are my favorite parts!

I pretty much taught myself paper-cutting. It's a lot of experimentation, especially when it comes to finding ways to make my designs 3D without glue. It's possible someone else has come up with similar techniques already but I like discovering them on my own.

Only twice have I started cutting a project and then abandoned it, and all the rest are in my gallery, so you can essentially see my entire learning progress by looking at my gallery.

Thank you! I'm self-taught and I try to come up with some new idea or technique every time I do one of these, so I'm glad you like.

Thanks very much! This was to my surprise one of my quickest free-standing cuttings to design/cut (I did it in one evening). A previous (unrelated) design had failed the day before so I had plenty of determination!

This is fascinating. I can't stop staring at it and wondering how you folded it to make it all fit so perfectly.
