Celebrating Deviousness - December 2016
In Recognition of Exemplary Membership and an Outstanding Spirit of helpfulness and mentoring within the DeviantArt community Introducing loish (https://www.deviantart.com/loish)     `loish (https://www.deviantart.com/loish) My name is Lois van Baarle and I joined DeviantArt when I was just starting out with digital art, in 2003 - 13 years ago! I’ve always been really passionate about drawing digitally and also sharing my work and getting to know other artists. That’s why DeviantArt has always been so important to me. It’s been a way for me to find inspiration, learn new techniques, and get in touch with other artists. My art is digital, and my main focus is on getting my art to show
The Next Phase of DeviantArt Eclipse
Eclipse launched to Beta Testers this past fall and has opened up to hundreds of thousands of deviants since. We continue to learn, develop, and improve the next phase of DeviantArt, and we’re looking forward to launching Eclipse to all of the community. A Glimpse at What We’re Working On In addition to the following top-priority areas in Eclipse, we regularly post Change Logs highlighting bug fixes, both big and small. Be sure to watch @team to stay updated, because we occasionally post about upcoming features still in the early stages of ideation, and we love to hear what you have to say. Here’s a glimpse into what we’re working on, but please keep in mind that our timelines for these changes are not yet finalized, and the features are subject to change: Dark and light theme adjustments: We're revisiting the contrast colors used in Eclipse's light and dark themes with an aim to improve readability. Muted tags: The ability to “mute” (or “block”) specific tags in browse and search
Eclipse Change Log: April 3, 2019
In this week’s change log, we've reduced thumbnail sizes as well as addressed a number of bug fixes and improvements. Stay tuned for more, and keep the bug reports and feature requests coming! Thumbnail Sizes Have Been Reduced! A top community concern was that thumbnails were too big across the site. Based on your feedback, we’ve reduced thumbnails 75% of their original size. We’re also working on improvements to Feedback — an area where many deviants feel that everything is too big — and exploring how we can reduce the layout here as well. Change Log Fixed issue where the feedback dropdown would appear really tall. Added anchor links on Profile, so that clicking "Show All" on the Watchers and Groups section would bring you to the proper section on the About page. Fixed issue where, after removing comments from your profile, you would not be able to add them back. Fixed issue where “edit” button no longer appeared on your comments. Fixed issue where last decimal place of price

Thanks to everyone for your help testing the updated design of the Modal. We're still making tweaks before a wider release, but your comments were essential to helping us corner some issues!

Our next phase is ready for Beta, and once again, we need your help!

Sometimes deviants genuinely aren't sure what constitutes as Mature Content, Explicit, or some of our other reportable types of information. This feature brings three new aspects of reporting to help streamline our process and keep DeviantArt as safe as possible.

Introducing Reporting Notifications

Occasionally, when someone forgets to tag a deviation as Mature Content, or when they upload a deviation that goes against our policy, it can be a simple misunderstanding. For this feature, at some point after a deviation is reported, an anonymous notification will be sent to the owner, asking if the deviation is Mature Content (or whatever it was reported as).

This will give the owner a chance to address the issue and possibly rectify the situation on their own. If the owner chooses not to take action and it's not reported again, staff is likely to agree that no deletion or tag is necessary, and will likely mark the report invalid. If the number of reports rises, it will rise in the queue, and staff will more quickly take the appropriate action, whether that's adding a tag, deleting, or marking the report as invalid.

Note: Even though a notification is sent to the Deviation Owner, every report still goes to our staff for final approval. This feature is simply a chance for a deviant to fix what might be an honest mistake!

Introducing Auto-Tagging as Mature Content

If a certain number of people report the same deviation, that deviation will automatically become tagged Mature Content. As part of our Beta group, you will be helping us determine what that certain number should be.

However, what if those who have reported it are incorrect, whether due to trolling or a genuine misunderstanding of DeviantArt's policy?

Introducing Disputes

For every action taken -- either by a staff member or community-auto-tagging -- the deviation owner has the ability to "Dispute." This means, if enough people report a deviation to auto-tag it as Mature, the Owner can dispute this claim. DeviantArt staff will then take a close look into what was reported and make a final decision, sometimes reversing that action.

Same with a deleted deviation -- if a deviation is deleted by Staff, the owner will get a Notification, and if the owner believes it is allowed on DeviantArt and our staff made a mistake, they can dispute the claim, explaining why, and the staff will give it a second consideration.

That was a lot of info. To let it sink in, I'll go over our goals for this test.

About This Test

In this test, we would like you to assume two roles -- one of a Deviation Reporter, and one of a Deviation Owner.

:bulletgreen: As Deviation Reporter, your testing will be easy:
  1. Go to this Profile Gallery.
  2. Report one of the deviations as Mature, Explicit, or Underage Nudity.
  3. Go to the More Menu > Correspondence.
  4. Verify you have a notification there announcing that you have reported this deviation, what the Report-type was, and that all the links work.

FYI, we made a conscious choice to have this notification sent to that URL and not to your "regular" correspondence with your other notifications. We don't want reporters to feel spammed for doing their part across the site.

:bulletgreen: As Deviation Owner, your testing requires a few more steps:
  1. This is probably the only time in the history of DeviantArt we will ask this, but go to this deviation. Take a screenshot of it or Right-click-save-as... I promise, damphyr said it was okay. (Please do not test reporting using any other images besides this cute cat.)
  2. Submit this image as a deviation. You can submit it to Scraps if you don't want to spam your watchers. You can use the category: Photography / Animals, Plants & Nature / Domesticated Animals.
  3. If you have an alternate account, please report this deviation as Mature Content, Explicit, or Underage. If you don't have an alternate account and don't want to make one, please post your deviation URL in the comments below, and add the text: "Can another Beta User please report this for [Mature Content, Explicit, Underage Nudity]?"
  4. Once your deviation has been reported -- for Mature Content, Explicit, or Underage -- you should receive a notification.

:bulletgreen: If it was reported for Mature Content, your notification should look like this.

:bulletgreen: If it was reported for Explicit Pornography, your notification should look like this.

:bulletgreen: If it was reported for Underage Nudity, your notification should look like this.
  5. From here, you can take two different routes:
:bulletgreen: Get your deviation "auto-tagged as Mature Content" by making a comment to this journal, something like "Please report this deviation (post URL) for Mature Content. I am testing auto-tagging!" And some Good Beta Samaritans will come along to help you.

:bulletgreen: Tag me in a comment (@ LaurenKitsune) and ask me, as a staff member, to either 1) Tag your deviation as Mature Content, 2) Delete it as Explicit, or 3) Delete it as containing Underage Nudity. After I do this, you will get a Dispute Notification. You can now test out the Dispute ability by clicking that button. You can optionally tag me again in another comment, and ask me to accept or reject your dispute. At this time, you should get another notification, letting you know the decision that staff made on this deviation.

:bulletgreen: Finally, as a helpful Beta Tester:
  • Please go into the comments below and report URLs posted by your fellow deviants, so they can test out the receipt of Owner Notifications.

If all the above sounds confusing, please take the time to read it slowly. It should be able to be completed if you take it one step at a time!

What to Report

Here are some areas to focus on in your reporting and looking at notifications:
  • Design, look, and feel of the notifications.
  • Functionality of the links and buttons.
  • Function of auto-tagging as Mature Content.
  • Function of Disputes.
  • Your reporting experience as a whole.

Please note that (besides for this test, of course) incorrect / inappropriate Reporting behavior, such as spam-reporting or troll-reporting for whatever purpose will result from a ban from accessing the Moderation Desk as a whole.

Bugs can be reported in the Reporting and Notifications project. Please DO NOT report bugs as a comment in this article, since there will be so many comments back and forth asking for Beta testers help and Staff help. I don't want bugs to get lost in the process.

In your Bug Report, please include a link to the deviation you reported, as well as browser info, OS information, screenshots, links, reproduction steps, and anything else you think will help describe your issue. Thank you in advance for your help!

I notice you claim to be interested in making the reporting system more streamlined but thus far it appears to be anything but. My case and point being the help desk, I can no longer contact the help desk about anything. Not just reporting deviants that are breaking the website's rules but also about general inquiries. I can't find the method to contact them about abusive deviants. There is no options for contacting the help desk about anything whether I go to what used to be the help desk here  help.deviantart.com/ or to the new one here www.deviantartsupport.com/en/ I have never filed spam report tickets or attempted to misuse the report feature so there is no reason for me to be blocked from using it. A deviant's ability to ask for clarification on a policy is actually something that cuts down on the number of reports that have to be filed. There is currently a petition to bring back the original help desk. I dare any one of you to make a second account that isn't gifted with your admin privileges that way you can check and see for yourself what I'm talking about.

You claim "We don't want reporters to feel spammed for doing their part across the site" yet there are journals right now like this one with hundreds of names on it of deviants whom that deviant suspects are reporting them. If you click the ctrl and F buttons before typing in my account name, you will find my name on that list. Since it was added I have been bullied by deviants I didn't know and insulted behind my back. This list has been passed around a community of 3d artists that focus primarily on a specific fetish called super heroines in peril. A few years ago when report groups posted up sections in their groups with lists of policy violating deviants the deviantArt staff posted a journal calling it "bullying by proxy" before the deviantart administration shut those groups down. I have tried to disband these groups. I have tried to ask the deviantArt staff for help. Now reporting deviants are being bullied by proxy and the deviantArt staff have done nothing because the bullying deviants have not linked back to their accounts. You do not care about reporting deviants at all.

This isn't a bug, this is a general complaint. Is there an admin whom I can speak with over the phone about this? I don't want to try emailing anyone, I want to actually speak with an administrator.

I believe there is a flaw in this new system?? Many users who are quite popular or draw maybe My little pony or any other innocent stuff like that art are getting reported out of spite and/or people just don't understand the image and because the bot thinks the image is "inappropriate" it flags it. And when lets say a fetish picture gets to the front page. Multiple people would report it yet nothing happens and it doesn't get flagged?? I've actually seen more of that kind of fetish photographs on the "What's Popular" page than actual clean art. Could someone please fix this??

I don't like the new reporting system that you made. One user complained that a pornographic photographer blocked him because he told him to obey the rules. He cannot report his nasty photos now because a pornographic artist blocked him. How do you expect from the copyright owner to report an art thief if an art thug blocked him? When you block the user, you automatically hide all of his illustrations and his activities.

Any deviation is visible if the user is logged out, and the URL can be grabbed that way.

Reporting an IP violation does not require a user to be logged in and can be filed at any time.

Thanks for the explanation. But what should we do if the illustrator doesn't have a profile on deviantART.com? There have been several instances where people have complained that they cannot report copyright infringement because they are not copyright holders. A professional illustrator who has an account on your site died a few years ago from sepsis. Now we cannot report a copyright infringement because he passed away. The same goes for the magazine that the team of lawyers wrote; it doesn't allow us to report art thieves.

Everything was concise and easy to understand, and worked as expected.
I liked the design of the notifications, they were attention catching without being obtrusive.

I'm not sure if my challenge was accepted, denied, or still under consideration yet. If either of the former, I haven't received a notification. If the latter, I think there should be a way to let the deviant know? It doesn't bother me because I don't have any investment in that picture, but it's been seven days and I imagine that someone with an actual challenge might be getting a bit antsy.

Other than that, everything went smoothly. I really like this feature, that it can temporarily remove potential problem pictures before the staff can get around to looking at it but also still takes the artists input into consideration

I stumbled on a profile where the artist have drawing of young women being kidnapped and raped (we don't see the intercourse, but we see some sexual torture, and the description or title is clear on the fact that this is a rape!). I'm surprised I didn't find any thing in the report tool to report those disgusting things! I don't want just to hide them, I want them removed! It's not normal that DA is approving rape!
