Kitsilano Neighborhood II by Laurazee Kitsilano Neighborhood II by Laurazee
Acrylic on Canvas, 30" wide X 24" tall
Status: Sold

Commission piece. I hesitated posting this one, because it's a recreation of one I've already done, so nothing new! But comparing this one with my earlier effort, version II does seem brighter. I remember staring at it and going, "But it looks just like the other one! Agh! Have I learned nothing?" (on the other hand, it's kinda reassuring to know you *can* recreate things - though heaven help me if I go all Warhol on this one for years, cranking out Kits Neighborhoods like so many soup can lithographs).

Thing is, I guess it's the subtle improvements that help. I've learned a bit more about how to make colors screamingly bright. In this one, the bushes are yellow because the customer wanted more autumn shades in the picture. I guess that gives it more of an every-crayon-in-the-box feel. Otherwise, it's the same crowded, bright houses and slopy bridges. Movement and instability - characteristic of Kits.

It's around MacDonald & 7th. If you felt all squeezed in and like you were going the wrong way and there were too many irresponsible cyclists, you were no doubt driving there. :D

I felt that way about most of West Van. I tried to keep to the Sunshine Coast and Trans Canada Highway whenever possible. It's still pretty cool to be on a world renown website such as this one and spot someplace familiar. Thanks.

I just recently moved here, so not really a Vancouverite ;) but I live in Kits and it's really pretty much exactly like that painting of yours :)

Even better. I'm not "from here" either.

Secretly, I think outsiders have a better perspective.

I love this painting. It reminds me so much of the house I lived in when I was little.
I also like brighter, more cheery colors in this version. :)

Your paintings are like prepackaged meditations. When I saw it, I immediately thought of Kits, before I read the name. I only recently became an inhabitant of Kits, and it is a strange shift, and in some ways I am an alien here...

Hey, that's great! Welcome. Every neighborhood has a vibe and Kits tends to appeal to granola types, transient students. You might just need to go a little further east, eventually (I'm in False Creek/Fairview, myself). Where are you transplanted from?

False Creek is pretty nice. I just came from the ultimate of granola meccas, Nelson. However, I grew up in Langley, a place I'd have no use for if it wasn't for the friends and family that still remain.

Thank you so much. I loved doing this one. The colors were fun, and as for the drawing skills, I am very appreciative to have that called a "skill" (most people tend to wonder why I can't draw a straight line). So thank you! :)
