If you need help with something in one of my themes I hope that you can find your answer here. I don't always have the time to reply to everything. (Though, sometimes I'm just very lazy too. :p )

General Questions

Q: I couldn't find my answer, what do I do now?
A: Read the FAQ again to make sure you didn't miss anything!
A: www.justfuckinggoogleit.com/

Q: I downloaded a RAR/7z file. What's it for?
A: It's a file full with candy! :p Just get a program like 7-zip (recommended) or WinRAR to see what's inside the file. (You'll usally have to extract the contents to a folder if you're going to use it. It works like a zip-file.)

Q: Why don't you answer my question / When are you online on jabber?
A: Don't ask. :p I prefer to be creative and create stuff and not waste time on a reply to every single comment or note. It all depends on how I feel.

Q: What languages do you understand?
A: Swedish (main), English (second), Norwegian, Danish (but only written.)

Q: Do you take requests?
A: Maybe. But most of the time I don't.

Q: Can I modify one of your Visual Styles/Foobar themes/Other skin and submit it here on Deviantart?
A: As long as you use the same creative commons license that's showed below the preview image it's fine - creativecommons.org/licenses/b…

This license can be selected when you submit a new deviation. So don't forget to do it.
I would like to see the modification if you submit it, and please link back to the original too.

Visual Style FAQ

Q: How can I use one of your styles?
A: First you need a patched uxtheme.dll file. (If you don't already have one.)
You can find a universal patcher for Windows XP Service Pack 2 here: www.softpedia.com/get/System/O…
You can find a patcher for Windows XP Service Pack 3 RTM version 5512 here: www.softpedia.com/get/System/O…

Patch the file and follow the instructions.

If everything went fine, just doubleclick on the *.msstyles file. Then the display properties window will display the style in the small preview area.

And no, I don't give any support if the patcher don't work. Don't ask!

Q: Can I use your styles in Vista? (Or, can I use your styles in WindowBlinds?)
A: Yes, If you use WindowBlinds. See this youtube clip for more info on what you have to do - www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihtP0r…

Q: Will you port your themes to Vista?
A: No. I don't have Vista, and I have no plans on buying it.
Some of my styles however have been ported by PsycoB: psycob.deviantart.com/

Q: My fonts doesn't look the same as yours. What's wrong?
A: Did you install the fonts? Did you turn on ClearType for antialiased text? (Go to Display Properties > Appearance > Effects and select ClearType.)

Q: Some things are misplaced or not visible at all (or looks very strange.) What's wrong?
A: I have no idea, unless several other people reports the same bug. Most likely the problem is at your end. It can be everything from language settings to external 3rd party applications that conflicts with the theme.

It may also not be a bug. It may just be something that I made to make it easier for me. For example: I don't like vertical taskbars and don't style that area. Reason: Vertical taskbars are ugly no matter what you think! :x :p

Q: How do you create themes?

GTK/Emerald Theme FAQ

Q: What is a GTK theme?
A: A theme that you can apply in Gnome or xfce4 desktop environments if you use Linux/BSD.

Q: How do I use one of your GTK themes in Gnome/xfce4?
A: Extract the theme folder to the /home/your-username/.themes/ folder (ctrl+h to view hidden folders.) If you don't have a .themes folder you can create one. Then enter the settings for your appearance and choose to customize your current layout. Select the right widgets and metacity theme (If you're on xfce4 you can't use the metacity theme unless you install metacity and replace xfwm4 with it.).

Q: How do I use one of your emerald themes? (Make sure you have compiz-fusion and emerald installed first.)
A 1: First you need to install emerald.
Open a terminal and paste this line - sudo apt-get install emerald libemeraldengine0
Then go to System > Preferences > Emerald Theme Manager and select import to import the emerald file. You may need to start emerald too, push alt+f2 and type this: emerald --replace. If you want to go back to the default Window decorator, type: gtk-window-decorator --replace.
A 2: If the theme didn't come with and *.emerald file. Put the emerald theme in /home/your-username/.emerald/themes/
Open the emerald theme manager and select the theme from the list.
Tip: More detailed instructions on how to install emerald can be found here: www.webupd8.org/2009/03/ubuntu…

Q: How do I use the start-here.png "startbutton" icon?
A: Put it in your current icon theme's Places folder and backup+remove any icons that are named start-here.svg/png. Your icon theme should be located in /home/username/.icons/.

If you're using an OS default icon theme you'll need to open the gconf-editor and select to use a custom application icon in the applications-menu.

After all this - Terminal > killall gnome-panel to refresh the panels.

A: Did you follow the installation instructions exactly? Use these instructions: lassekongo83.deviantart.com/ar…

Q: I miss an extra function. Will you add it?

Hiya~
I'm using your GlaskalasP theme (which I absolutely love btw) I've hit a minor problem though-- when creating a second toolbar, it reverts too 'classic style'

Example: [link] Is there any possible chance of fixing this--?
Hi, I was wondering how to create themes for Windows XP, would you mind explaining it to me? Maybe make a tutorial and upload it to youtube?

Really love the themes you've created but have sadly suddenly run into problems with the "eno" Visual Style.

Similar to "Kimba" and "komate", the text shown in the taskbar has started to be black as opposed to the white on bootup. The only method I've found to fix this is to log-off the user and log back in again, but this is becoming rather annoying.

Not sure if its linked as well, but my Comodo Firewall is also failing to display its icon on bootup, despite its process running in task manager. Could it be an error in the visual style relating to parts of the taskbar?

Many thanks for any help, and please continue to make these brilliant VS!

It's a very strange problem because I've strictly declared that the text should be white in the taskbar. And then there are very few people that reports the same problem. The only thing that I can think of is that you've used a bad uxtheme patch or some other 3rd party application that have alterated the taskbar somehow. WindowBlinds is known to cause certain font problems when it's uninstalled for example.

Thanks for the quick response. Good news, I found a fix to my Firewall icon issue which was to do with hiding UPnP devices. And this has appeared to fix the Black text problem too.
stivo85's avatar
Can you describe me what did you do to fix black text on taskbar problem, please?
Ice-Globe's avatar
For me personally, the problem was fixed by hiding UPnP devices.

Go to My Network Places, then under Network tasks, click "Hide icons for networked UPnP devices"

No idea how it fixed it, but it was definitely the cause.
stivo85's avatar
I did it, but nothing changed.. I wish, but unless I have to give up this style.. Thx, anyway.

I've been using NOSP VS [link] for about a year (because it's fantastic), and since this last boot (my XP updated last night) I've had the same problem of black taskbar text. Logging out and in again worked, and UPnP device icons were already hidden.

I'd love to hear if anyone here found a fix.
Cheers.

I'm getting the same problem again. It's started appearing ever since I've removed user password meaning it'll login automatically following boot up.

It's as if windows beats the VS loading if there is no login screen, but force the OS to login from initial boot and it'll show the correct font colour.
In most of your themes, the start button is one pixel off the bottom of the screen. This is a problem if you just throw your mouse in its general direction to click it. The problem was on my end though, but most people with multiple input languages will also have this problem.

Solution: The language icon (small blue box, bottom-right in your tray) stretches the taskbar a bit. Click it -> "Show language bar" -> bottom-right button -> settings -> Language bar -> Uncheck "Show on desktop". If you need to change your input language quickly, just press Alt-Shift.
If you are having trouble getting the themes to show up then create a folder in %SYSTEMROOT%\Resources\Themes that is named the same as the msstyles file. So in my case I did the Kupo Finale for XP. The msstyles is named kupofl.msstyles so I just created a folder simply named kupofl and then dropped the file in there. That took care of the files not showing up in the themes list.

Here's one more question... are you the one in all the backgrounds?
kevind23's avatar
You should put GTK themes in /usr/share/themes/ (or at least make a symlink), so that all users can enjoy them. This also makes applications you're running as root use the same theme.
