Good afternoon, Nathan. Here's a happy birthday shout out to you from California. You have so many stunningly beautiful works in your gallery; it's difficult to "favorite" any one. For today, I'm picking this tutorial, also as a thank you for your generosity in sharing your process in a way that imparts knowledge useful for artists to become better at what we do.
Cheers and best regards,
Ed

Good morning, Nat, and a happy birthday shout to you from California. There are so many great works in your gallery, it's difficult to pick which to fave. I've picked this one, and thank you for your kind and generous sharing of not only your art and style, but also the process by which you make it.
Best regards,
Ed

Interesting and enlightening. I struggle with oil paints - can't seem to get how much to put in for the fat on lean concept :(

Hey, here's a good start. Try this:

1st layer - use only solvent (OMS or turp) to mix with the paint
2nd layer - 1 part solvent & 1 part oil
3rd layer - only oil

Hope this helps :)

Let me know if you have any questions!

Oderless Mineral Spirit. It's a good alternative for turpentine :)

Wow! Very informative tutorial/walkthrough! I'm going to let my 12 year old nephew read over this; he's just starting out in watercolours but has mentioned wanting to try his hand at both acrylics and oil painting as well.

I, myself, am going to have to try the grisaille technique for my next digital painting. I know it won't work exactly the same as it does with traditional painting, but I may get decent results by using pressure sensitivity and opacity layering with my Wacom drawing tablet.

Congratulations on the Daily Deviation! You are a wonderful artist & it is very kind of you to share some of your techniques with us!

This dead layer part is amazing, I always looked at how real some of my favorite artists paint the skin, and that's why! It also give an adequate explanation on the use of gray layer in the start of a painting! Thank U! I'll save it and use in the future, for sure!

Wow, this is so enlightening! I hope to start painting with oil soon but I didn't know how I would start. The simple design and explanations really help rather than have to read through long, long articles just to find some simple points. Thank you!

Wow. I learned more about oil painting than in the year we had to do an oil painting in school.
The teachers were like: "Just paint this with oil"
Nobody told us HOW to even use oil properly.

My god, amazing.
I still actually don't understand the 'glazing' layer - if it's transparent then why the color tone is a bit changed?
