The Visible Light and the Painting’s Lighting Composition

drawing001

During the movement of Medieval/Gothic era, most artists paint altarpieces and frescos. These paintings had fixed locations and they were not meant for portability. Part of the planning the artists did, was to study the lighting at the locations. Churches tended to have dramatic lighting because of the windows located on high walls, creating theatrical lighting effect. Depending on which side their painting would be placed, they would match the lighting composition (direction/softness) in their painting based on the physical light available in the location (see illustration above). This makes the painting looks naturally lit by the visible light creating life like image. This lighting composition technique had been used by Flemish artists, especially Jan Van Eyck and many great artists after them.

More tips will be posted soon so please watch!

I'm delighted to find on DA someone whose works are still more classical ( I don't dare to say "academic")
than mine...I have been told that I lack some  fancy...I'm too old to try mangas....
I love your portraits, which wouldn't be any the worse of the  Gallery  "du XVIII siècle" of the Louvre...

Thanks! I appreciate you classifying Academic from Classical as I'm trying to avoid academic style :) I'll be traveling to Europe this fall and excited to see Louvre! It will be my first time there

In French, the adjectve "academique" is pejorative... Your painting isn't academic, certainly! In Paris, you may spend one month in the Louvre, but don't forget to visit lots of important
museums:  Orsay ( impressionism) - Rodin and lots of others.
If you are in Paris in July, don't miss the superb exhibition " J-B Corot: le peintre et ses modèles"
at the Musée Marmottan-Monet: fantastic!  It has been extended until July 22, following its
 success.
Don't go to Versailles, but rather in the Loire valley: Amboise, Chenonceaux, Azay-le Rideau,
Cheverny, Langeais, Saumur will make you dream...
 I wish you'll have a wonderful travel!
