This picture managed to break my art block, so salute it! This originally started out as a character outfit redesign but then - gasp! - the "background bug" bit me and it became more of a full piece than a clothes design. I really enjoyed doing the hills and trees and sky through thr train window; backgrounds can be fun (when you know what you're doing!). The map above the windows is a made up train map.

This character is Jessamine, and she's on the train going home to spend the winter holidays with her family in the countryside! For those of you who don't know Jessy, she's Jonathan's sister and a fashion design student. She's generally a happy person, who starts a lot of projects she never finishes, and needs a fair dose of attention to feel happy. She and Jonathan bicker quite a bit, mostly about trivial things, but they know they love each other so little arguments are okay. Oh, and I really ought to introduce Jessamine's boyfriend on DA soon, as I know more about him than I did a little while ago. She met him on a train, actually - which is why I fancied drawing her on a train in the first place.

I'm quite pleased with this overall, though I had hell with the colour scheme. I so wanted to give Jessy a wacky colourful outfit, but I was worried it would conflict with the background so I swallowed that desire, which was probably a good thing.

Done in markers, reference used.

This is such a delicious style! I like her clothing as well, somewhere in there you can still tell there was an outfit design part involved. (:

Ohh yes, I adore fashion design. :D I'm usually not content to leave the clothes looking normal and every day on my pictures - far too much fun designing something else (though actually this is one of my more normal designs! :giggle:).

A lot of interesting things going on in this drawing. The colors, the clothing choices and the scenery passing by in the background.

Reminds me of my own trips on the train, good job!

Thanks - the London underground trains I remember going on when I was little had seat patterns similar to this, so I guess that's where I got the idea of the pattern from!

She's adorable. You did a really nice job on the coloring. Looks like a scene from a story book. Keep up the good work. :)

I love the story that's being told here. Her clothes and posing give me an idea of her quirky, attention-grabbing personality, and the tartan on the seats and the snow outside the windows make the image feel so cozy. It's really cute!

Great - I'm really happy you like this! The tartan on the seats is a pattern I remember being on train seats in my childhood - you don't see them anymore, though. Thank you for the :+fav:!

I really really looove this piece. It reminds me of my trips back to Liverpool for Christmas when I lived away from hom.

The background on this piece is wonderful. It's got a great range of colours and details and yet is so simple it doesn't distract from the girl.

I looove the girl. Her outfit, her hat (which I want), the way her hair is, her happy expression... it all comes together so well and it just works. It conveys everything this picture should.

I also love your colouring effect with the white lines.

Yeah, that's exactly right - trips home for Christmas and other holidays when you live away from home. I also want her hat - got inspired by hats I saw at an anime convention. Thank you very much for the :+fav: on this.

I have to agree with the "back from the convention" idea though :XD:
the pose is really cute and I you can totally see the effort you put into the background! generally the whole picture looks very smooth and a kind of modern retro, if that makes sense...
and that coat is awesome.

I kind of know what you mean by modern retro, I'm much fonder of it than actual retro, which I am sadly not too fond of, though I'd like to be. :XD:

Ahh, thank you! I was so nervous about the colour scheme; I'd picture something far more colourful but when push came to shove I decided to veer for a conservative colour scheme rather than ruin it with something out of place. Thanks for the :+fav:!

I just love eveything on this picture. I really like Jessy's outfit even tho it's not loud/colourful, and her kitty hat of course! *Imagines Jessy with bags of manga and Pocky poking out of her pocket on a picture called "Home from the Expo"* I know the feeling really well, too - I love an evening train ride home like nothing else!
I thought the Tube map inside the train and the tree-covered vastness outside clash a bit, tho!

Yeah! Nothing beats a long train ride with a cosy seat next to the window, lots of snacks and a magazine or an interesting book to read. Or a sketchbook!
Having said that, I've been on 4-day train journeys before and I loathed long-distance trains after that.

My iPod is my friend on long train journeys. The longest train journey I did was five and a half hours to Scotland and that was long enough, despite a funny toddler giving me a KitKat chunky for free^^
