They have literally made the world as it is today, livable for us animals – they've made the air we breathe, they create the food we eat, they make the soils fertile (together with fungi and microorganisms), they hold on to precious freshwater reserves, they make the rain and regulate its distribution, they mitigate the heat of the Sun and give us shade. They feed literally everyone on the planet – almost all the energy all living organisms on Earth
