Description
I've been in a pretty dark mood lately, to my delight, and I'm painting a lot of Dark artworks. Not all will find their way here, some are too personal. But others I'll be showing. Make no mistake, this is one of them.
Ah.... yeah, so you might be confused because this piece is kinda blinding. I mean literally, try viewing it on a bright screen in a dark room.... or maybe better don't, they say don't look into the Sun with your bare eyes. I seem to be into extremes lately. So what's this all about?
This is a rendition of Azazel, my Guardian Demon, in the form of a great horned and winged lion. Why? Because in my mind manticores have been associated with him since ever.... and when I say manticores I mean my own take of them, great lion-like draconic creatures, ferocious and noble, and NOT having a hooman face. So I had this image of Azazel sitting in my mind for a while, at some point I decided to try to put it on (digital) canvas. It's rather quick and somewhat messy, but then again all my artwork is like that now. At least art keeps going, right now that is more important than perfection. Maybe it always was.
So this being a portrayal of a Demon, of course it's dark art. Azazel was known as "The Shining One" in ancient times, by merit of his incredibly bright aura, manifestation of his ineffable power. However, he definitely has profound Darkness in him - he is a Demon, after all. I can feel it, but I am yet to explore it more deeply. Maybe some day I get to draw his Darkness as well.
Edit: And there it is, much sooner than ever anticipated!
Even as I was writing the description an image flashed in my mind. I was able to "hunt" it down, capture it and bring it to life. It opened the gate to something like a vision of its own.

Be respectful.
Azazel is a powerful Spirit and my Demon Guardian.
I shall not tolerate disrespect or blasphemy here.
Without darkness light is meaningless, and the brighter the light the sharper and darker the shadows. So obvious, but so often overlooked by folks who live their lives in 24-hour artificial light.
I love how you've used the dark clefts in the rock pointing up beneath his shining paws to show that.
