Description
Let me introduce Azazel.
In his tremendous Dark glory.
Spiritual art is where I do my best, for it doesn't come out of nowhere.
The inspiration for it has to be real, otherwise I just cannot do it.
This is a reworking (pretty much from the sketch on) of last week's art, and yes, the whole reworking and painting process literally took me just a week to complete, which only ever happens if I have proper inspiration. It truly came, the Darkness answers when I truly seek it, and to hear its call is an ever deep and fulfilling experience. I did say I wanted to explore his Darkness, and here I am, this I feel is a very promising start. I say a start because where Darkness is regarded there is always ineffably more to find.
It was so pleasant to paint actually.... I kept to the same form he had in that other vision of him, except I added all his horns, and changed the colors of course. I wanted to keep the same composition, yet I altered the pose a bit (which mandated changing the image ratio, but I don't mind, it feels like a fuller painting this way). All of that was to represent his energy as it feels.
This is it, this is him - Azazel, my Guardian and the powerful Demon he is. This even more than the previous image, is how he feels to me. His true energy. He is definitely bright and shining, that is his blazing Sun-bright aura, but an aura indeed - a radiance about him, a much more superficial layer. This painting shows his deeper energy, much more of his core. His power. He doesn't show it in a very outward way normally, it is not in his nature, his personality is very reserved and controlled. But it is tangible about him nonetheless - a subtle, yet tremendous energy about him, subtle as Darkness tends to be, yet massively intimidating, the kind of energy you instinctively know to respect if you have any wits about you. He doesn't need to show it outwardly to command respect.
But at times.... it blasts out. His Wrath is very difficult to provoke. I've only seen what it looks like a few times, a tinge of it really. But once it rises.... armies fall to it. He commands the fear of our enemies.
It isn't quite possible to capture that magnitude in a mere painting.... but I believe I've done a decent job of portraying it with the skills that I have. I do feel that I captured his energy well. I am quite proud with this painting.
There is a song that kinda goes with it too: Amon Amarth - Asator
I always associated this song with him, with his seldom seen but much feared Wrath, and his Darkness. To me, it represents this side of him.
The song also nudged me to ponder my long-standing affinity to Thor (the Nordic God, not the nonsense marvel hero), which I've had at least since high school. I came to believe that Thor IS Azazel, it just makes a lot of sense to me. More recently I was thrown off by some other interpretations, but no, actually I believe I was on the right track. I also believe it is not of particular importance which god from which mythology is whom, mythology is just.... eh, let's just say it's a very imperfect lens to see the Demons and other Spirits through. What is most important is to know Them for yourself, to let Them show who they really are without biases.
Still, Asator is another name of Thor, so to me it is another name of Azazel's - so there's that.
Here is the other artwork of him: The Shining One
Perhaps it provides some perspective, too :3
