I haven't written anything here in quite a long time, so I guess I'm overdue for an update!

I have been busy since last summer with not only convention planning (I ran the second Toronto Sailor Moon Celebration successfully with really awesome growth in attendance!) but also familial obligations.

My aunt fell ill suddenly last June (she is fine now), which had me a bit distracted in the last bit of convention planning so there were small issues that popped up as a result. The convention did go very well and I'm so happy that many people enjoyed it. We had an attendance of approximately 650 people (which is an over 300% increase of our first year attendance of 180 people).

Anyway, my aunt hd to be in hospital about 5 weeks before they insisted that we transfer her to a retirement home. We also had to deal with the fact that she would never be able to return to her house and everything would have to be sorted through and dealt with (given to people, sold, donated, or discarded) before we could put it up for sale.

My mother and I did the bulk of the work at the house when it came to the contents. My mother even had to take a leave of absence from work because of the stress of dealing with all of this (plus another family member became ill a couple months later and is getting toward the end of her treatments now -- prognosis is good, but I'm maintaining her privacy). It was months of work, with me going usually for a full day every weekend until we were able to get it up for sale around Hallowe'en. I would generally go on the Saturday, except for the time I got a cold and needed to skip a couple weekends. Then I would take Sunday as a recovery day because all the dust and manual labour would constantly set my chronic hives off.

In December there was an offer finalized and we now had a deadline in mid-January to completely clear out everything else. We pulled it off, and it was such a relief to be done, but bittersweet as we had a lot of memories with that house. It was the place we had so many family gatherings over the years.

The other thing happening in this time frame was that I was offered a new job at a different company and I started there at the end of August. They were keen on me starting quickly, so I didn't take much of a break between things. Unfortunately, this new job did not work out due to budget constraints and I was laid off at the end of November. I have been freelancing and convention planning since then, while also looking for a new full time job in graphic design. It's challenging because there aren't a lot of positions for intermediate to senior level designers, and many places are asking for things like motion graphics (which I only have rudimentary knowledge of) and video editing (which I have limited experience with).

The convention planning has been going very well, I've got a lot of details finalized and I've been making the effort to do as much as I can while I have free time so that when I do secure a full time job I can give 100% of my energy to that. I am getting a little antsy having not lined up something permanent or even securing a long term contract yet. Job hunting is a stressful thing.

One of the most stressful things that happened in recent months though was that my beloved cat, Tabitha, passed away. She was an older cat at 18 years old and she had been getting treatments for kidney disease for 3-4 years. Kidney disease is progressive, so I was truly expecting a slower decline and being able to prepare for her passing with more notice. But she became ill very suddenly, started having seizures without warning, and as hard as she tried to hang in there and fight through it all -- she could only manage for so long. She made her best effort, but a day and a half was all she could manage from the onset of the first seizure. She passed away naturally at the vet with me by her side, in mid-January of this year.

It was one of the hardest days of my life and it still hurts a lot that she is gone. She was my best friend, my furry sidekick. I will miss her always.

I did make a memorial art piece that I submitted for this year's Wayzgoose anthology. I will add pictures soon of that. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out and I'm glad I was able to have it be included this year in her memory. I just wish we could have had more time together to keep making happy memories. I will make an effort to submit some more pieces here as well. I really don't do as much illustration now as I used to, but I should really share more of what I do here so that you all can see it.

When I'm ready, I will get a new cat, but that will be a new friendship and will in no way replace the indelible mark Tabitha has left on me.

I guess it's fitting that this year will be the year of cats at my convention too. I have announced our first three voice actor guests: Ron Rubin, Jill Frappier, and Loretta Jafelice (they played the three cats in the original English dub). They are all awesome people and I know Tabitha is watching over me and rooting for this year to be the biggest success of all.

I promise that it will be an awesome celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Sailor Moon anime. If you are able to make it, please do come by the Ontario Science Centre on Saturday, June 24, 2017. I hope to see you there! And be sure to tell me what your favourite parts were after :)

For more information on this year's Toronto Sailor Moon Celebration, please check out the official website and follow our official Facebook event page.

Keep on chasing Sailor Moon!
I'm one of the organizers for International Sailor Moon Day in Toronto.

Since we've seen a lot of interest in Toronto, we are doing two events. Abby Green will be hosting a picnic on Toronto Island, and I (Emily Gonsalves) will be hosting a special event at the Ontario Science Centre.

Details about the events are on our Facebook event page.

For the Science Centre special event, I am currently looking into options for a voice actor guest (to be announced once I have it confirmed) and I am accepting applications for artists who would like to exhibit. If you are interested in getting artist space, it will be $50 for a full table and $25 for a half table. If you want to be notified when sales for the artist tables are live, please send me an email. I'm using the Moon Chase email for this so that I can keep the details clear from my personal emails. I will respond within 24 hours to confirm I got your message.

Admission for the special event will be $10.

In addition to the special event, for those interested, I have secured a discount code for 20% off general admission to the Science Centre exhibits. This is a separate fee from the Sailor Moon special event. You can choose to do one or both, it's up to you!

Everything will be happening on Saturday, August 15th, 2015!

If you have any questions, please get in touch with me.

Hope you come out to one of our events, they're sure to be fun :)
Lately I have started working on a drawing for a tarot card. This one is going to feature Kasha, from my comic series, Green Corner. (edit: this was going to be part of a collaborative tarot project, but I am no longer participating)

I haven't drawn many standalone images of Kasha, but here is an old one.

Kasha is a celebrity within the world of Green Corner, famous for winning the Elven Championships two years in a row. The Elven Championships are prmarily an athletic competition, with a variety of events. Placing high in multiple events gives the competitor a greater chance of winning a title of "Queen" or "King" (with points assigned based on ranking in each event). The female with the highest points after all events earns "Queen" while "King" goes to the male with the highest points. The championships start at high school age, and Kasha is also seen as rather remarkable because she competes with others who are a year older than herself (she skipped a grade in school) and has always ranked highly.

I'm considering making the digital final of this tarot card into a tutorial, but right now I'm only at sketching stage. I will probably share a black and white version here when it's ready, before the final piece. Progress images will likely be posted to my beta readers for Green Corner first, then later shared on my art blog. I try to limit in-progress pieces in my DA gallery, but I'll be sure to link to my art blogposts showing the progress work for those interested.

I'm still working on finishing up the latest comic page too. I'm just working on a bunch of things at once, so it might take a little while before it's up.

As far as wedding collateral pieces go, I'm going to start cross-posting more of those here, to promote individual pieces and sets in my Zazzle shop. I have been working on a promotional flyer that is pretty much done now, I just need to make some minor adjustments for it to be distributed in different areas. I am also going to get started on a promotional brochure for wedding collateral design services, because those are better for distribution at places like hotels. The flyers are more for boards where space is limited for take-aways. I'm still trying to find a way to have contact information on a take-away piece for the flyer option, since I don't want to depend on people writing the info down. It's best to make it easy for people to get in touch with me for these services, after all!

If you're interested in seeing some of the pieces I've created already, you can see them here: eventdesign.emilygonsalves.com.
and the template designs are here: in my Zazzle shop.

The thank you cards are the easiest type of item to customize with your own text for other purposes, but if something else works for you, please go ahead and enjoy as you see fit! Custom wedding collateral (or other special event collateral) services generally run $50 hourly, but I would consult with you based on your needs and provide an estimate before starting work. Don't be afraid to contact me remotely. I am happy to talk to you over the phone and/or on Skype if meeting in person is not feasible. I have also done cards and programs for other purposes, so feel free to contact me for anything custom.

What a nice surprise for me to find today that I've received a Daily Deviation on My Creating Comics with Illustrator Tutorial! I'm still working on thanking everyone who faves it individually. Don't worry, if you don't have a message yet, it's coming.

Special thanks to kangel for suggesting my tutorial and Fantasystock for featuring.

I've got to say I really wasn't expecting to have my tutorial that I first published in mid-2008 to be getting so much attention now. It had been promoted previously on Vectortuts+, and a while later I wrote and published a second long form tutorial on Vectortuts+ called How To Create a Fantasy Character in Illustrator. That one is obviously more character driven, but I think it will be interesting to those who like my comic tutorial as well.

I have been thinking for a while now that I would like to write another long-form tutorial to be published on Vectortuts+. The tricky part for me is coming up with an idea. Lately I've been considering something specific, based on a project that I commit to some time ago. I need to sketch out my concept first and then I'll contact the editor at Vectortuts+ to see if it would be of interest to them.

If you have been following my comic series, Green Corner, or recently checked it out; you may have noticed that it has been a looong time since I have updated. I've had quite a few things happen in my personal life in the last year and I have been working on expanding my business. I'm an independent graphic designer, and I work on a variety of print and web projects. My portfolio is available at emilygonsalves.com if you would like to take a look at my design work. I do share some illustrations there as well, but a much smaller selection than I do here.

Something I've been trying to break into more is the wedding collateral business (invitations and everything else), and I have created budget friendly templates to go along with samples of the custom pieces I created for real clients. If you're interested in checking out the pieces I've made thus far, the special site I made for that is: eventdesign.emilygonsalves.com.

The template designs are available in my Zazzle shop. The thank you cards are the easiest type of item to customize with your own text for other purposes, but if something else works for you, please go ahead and enjoy as you see fit. Custom wedding collateral (or other special event collateral) services generally run $50 hourly, but I would consult with you based on your needs and provide an estimate before starting work. I haven't been drawing a lot in the last year, and part of it is lack of time because I've been focusing on other things (as I've mentioned above). My grandmother also passed away almost a year ago, and it has been difficult to push ahead with my comic even though I know she'd want me to continue. After having quite a few stressful things happen in the last year or so, it makes it feel even more special to receive a daily deviation now. I am very grateful for the recognition and it really does encourage me to move forward artistically.

Thank you very much to everyone who faves and comments. I truly do appreciate it all. And I'm glad to feel encouraged that you want to see more form me :)

I am currently working on finishing up a new page for Green Corner. Just one more panel to go and I can get back to sharing pages again! Thanks for your patience. It was really hard to put Green Corner aside for so long, but I'm glad to know that people want to see it continue!

-Emily Gonsalves

EDIT: I GENERALLY THANK EVERYONE WHO FAVES ANY OF MY DEVIATIONS. If you don't want to leave the message up, just delete/hide the message. I know some people feel it clutters their profile page or that the comment is spammy or whatever, but I am honestly leaving a thank you out of appreciation. I only mention the item you faved so you know what I'm thanking you for.

Please do not expect me to read an animated gif that says you don't want people posting thank yous for faves. If you don't write it in text and make it obvious, I probably won't see it right now. I currently have a lot of fave notices to go through. I intend to always let people know I appreciate it when they enjoy something I've shared, I don't stop saying thank you just because one of my deviations has become very popular. This means I could miss a notice on your page requesting people not to thank for faves. I am not purposely trying to annoy you, so please don't send a rude response.

If you want to prevent me from replying to a fave on My Creating Comics with Illustrator Tutorial, then please bookmark it on my artblog and leave an anonymous comment there (i.e. no email address and/or turn off notification of replies).

Thanks for understanding. Please continue to enjoy my deviations!

I can't do a real poll here, and I've yet to find a service that will work for this; so please leave a comment with your vote! Choose as many of the options as you like. If you choose "other," please let me know of any ideas you'd like to see. I have ideas for other specials, and the options that don't win now could be used in the future.

A lot of the options will require multiple characters. I will decide who will be featured and how many characters to include (probably two characters). I do feature the special on the home page of the Green Corner site, so I can't include everyone at once.

I'm looking forward to working on this special :)

You can see the winners of the DaniDraws.com Art and Learning Contest here.

Here's what Dani Jones said about my tutorial:
Emily’s entry explains how to create a comic in Adobe Illustrator. I’ve covered this topic before myself (here, here, and here), but I think Emily gives a lot of added insight. I’m not a comic artist - I don’t work in that style regularly and I don’t use Illustrator that often - so it’s great to have someone like Emily to showcase here. Even if you’ve combed through my former tutorials, you should be able to learn something new from her. I certainly did!

Emily’s tutorial is also in the form of a PDF, and a beautiful PDF it is. It is well laid out, easy to read, and filled with extra tips, illustrations, and explanations besides the main article.

She even provided links to my portfolio, my art blog, and Green Corner!

I'm really happy for the promotion. And it's so nice to hear such nice things :)

You can also download the tutorial on dA here
Green Corner is back, after an extended hiatus.

I also have a new Art blog which you might like to follow.

I will be starting on an Illustrator tutorial soon, while I make page seven of Green Corner. I think it will be of interest to some of you. I'll keep you updated!

By the way, I'm always available for commissions -- but you need to contact me with what you'd like for me to give you a price estimate.

I'm planning to start a print and T-shirt shop soon, so if there are any pieces in my gallery that you'd like to see, please let me know. (sorry, no fanart out of respect for the copyright holders)

P.S. I can't change my mood. I'm really feeling creative :)
Happy April Fool's Day!

The latest Green Corner special has two parts:

Shiny Red Bikini
and
Invisible Bikini

What? You didn't expect me to actually publish a nude image of Zalanda, did you?

My web server is currently down :( Unfortunately, this means you can't visit the Green Corner website at the moment and see the special as a rollover. I'll edit this entry when things are back to normal.

I hope you like the set!

Edit: Server is back up! Yay! Be sure to visit the Green Corner website to see the special with the roll-over effect.
If you haven't been to the Green Corner site lately, you might not have seen the new look. I've switched to a colour palette that is mainly lighter blues. The image on the index is different, too.

I will be publishing the spring special on the site soon, and that will be on the index for a little while.

I'm not sure yet if I'll be making an April Fool's special. If I do, it might be less fancy than what I usually do for the specials. I will definitely be making a special for Easter. I'm still brainstorming at the moment, but I'm hoping to make something fun :)

And don't forget that you can request desktop versions of any of the specials! Just let me know which special you want and your screen size.
I've been working on my print portfolio and résumé package lately. The lamp illustration is something I'd been working on as an addition to my portfolio. It will also be posted on my portfolio website soon.

I will be resuming inking of Green Corner shortly, with my shiny new pen :)
(the first one broke, I received the new one as a birthday gift)

I'm hoping to finish formatting and test printing my portfolio pieces within the next few days.

I'll also be starting a new holiday special for Green Corner soon, this time featuring the lovely couple Alshina and Koru, for Valentine's Day.
  • Reading: The Alchemist
  • Drinking: juice
With all the winter holidays around this time, I decided to make a special holiday image for Green Corner. Whatever you celebrate this time of year, I hope you have a wonderful time :)

I did have some difficulty when it came to shading the skin for Barudo (the muscular man). Most specifically, I ended up with two versions of his abdominal muscles. I found this seemed more natural.

While I had photo references, it was the development of a simplified way to depict the abs without making it extremely obvious that I found a bit challenging. I temporarily forgot about some of the artistic reference books I have and only thought to look at them today. But I think my solution works, so it's ok.

Of course, Barudo and Zalanda are the two Green Corner characters that I find the most difficult to draw, because of their exaggerated figures.

The concept was fun though, and I'm likely to continue doing special holiday pictures for Green Corner. It gives me a chance to try something different with the characters that readers aren't likely to see in the comic just yet.

The next holiday image will probably be up in time for Valentine's Day, featuring Alshina and Koru.

Please let me know if you like these holiday images. The more positive response I get, the more holiday images I'll try to do :)

I will continue to add the completed art here as well, but keep in mind that posting the art to my devArt account will likely be slightly delayed from updates to the website.

I hope you like Green Corner :)
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

"Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and owlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble."

Hallowe'en is fast approaching :)

I'm currently working on some Hallowe'en-themed art. I'll post a digital version of Aena in her Hallowe'en costume (dressed up as a witch) as soon as it's finished.
