Puh - I have no idea ^^. I never had a group that I could "grow".
A few things I recognized - keeping things running as an admin (to keep people within the group). Contests might be an idea - but I would gather a few more people than just yourself as judges. For advertising: I found one group that is only for contests: contest-office.deviantart.com/ Inviting someone's artworks into a group that isn't already in a group might work well, too - at least that's a way how I found some groups. And next (maybe a bit strange thing, don't know if it really helps): Choosing a group name that shows up quite on top of the list when people search for groups, meaning: it starts with a letter high up in the alphabeth.
You're welcome (: Well - I think you already wrote something about that contest, or am I wrong? In a journal I think. But - I understood it like that, that it's christmas tree ornaments, which is something I don't make . Otherwise I thought I might enter with my window stars, or at least one of them.
First of all have a good group -- something that doesn't already exist on dA, a group other artists need, a group which offers them something other groups don't -- either because the other groups are inactive or because other groups don't fit the specific needs this new group is going to fulfill.
Then you invite people who might need the group.
Then let it run its own course. If the group is truly useful, it will attract new members on its own. No need to excessively promote it.
If you want the group to grow larger than it already is, good promotion tools are > contests (only for group members ~ and make membership easy -- just a click of a button -- auto approve all memberships ) > interactive journals -- blogs that stimulate discussion or art creation > adding artwork or journals (of non members) to the group -- more people will learn about your group in a positive way, because you use your group to showcase another artost's work. > affiliating with other groups > adding the group icon to your comment signature -- that way every time you comment, people will see your group -- (an icon draws more attention than a link) > having an attractive looking group icon -- make the icon visually appealing.
^^ at least these things seem to work just my observation so far
Awesome thank you for your tips! Some of these I'm already doing as well, which is good. So I noticed you posted doing something, other groups do but have gon inactive. I went looking for resource groups so long ago and could never find what I was looking for. I still need to post so much more up as well. I noticed a lot of these resource groups only put in so much effort and quit sadly. intend to post up a crap ton more.
