Saerell had stared into the abysmal darkness so long, lying curled upon her side on the cold stone, breathing the fetid air, that she had lost all sense of time's passage. It seemed an eternity since he'd left her here, alone and bereft. She had listened with every fiber of her being for two things--his footsteps, upon the stones of the passage, or his voice, speaking her name in the dark.
Neither had come.
