Silmarillion: Awakening

I suppose this should have a warning for that evil, evil nudity. Sorry. I don't buy the Elves awakening at Cuiviénen with clothes on, nor subscribe to the Cuiviényarna stating that male Elves awoke first and the ladies had no choice but to love them above all else. The lady in front looks like she's having fun examining the stars on her own, I think.

Anyway - enough babble.

It is told that even as Varda ended her labours, and they were long, when first Menelmacar strode up the sky and the blue fire of Helluin flickered in the mists above the borders of the world, in that hour the Children of Earth awoke, the Firstborn of Ilúvatar. By the starlit mere of Cuiviénen, Water of Awakening, they rose from the sleep of Ilúvatar; and while they dwelt yet silent by Cuiviénen their eyes beheld first of all things the stars of heaven. Therefore they have ever loved the starlight, and have revered Varda Elentári above all the Valar.

Cuiviényarna is just a romantic story that helps children to learn counting, I definitely agree with you that they didn't awake in sex order nor in clothes. Great ideas here

Darknight-Stock & Lady Elleth,
Where the background photo(s) taken? It reminds me of some places I have seen in Oregon, like the Blue River Valley area and other valleys connected to the greater Willamette Valley. I have a videos. Mist, mountains and forests deep!

I like it! And thanks for using my stock photo

Thank you, and thank you for providing the stock! :)

I love it. I love the tales, this particular tale is dear to me. I think this depiction does it justice. Beautiful.

Thank you very much. :)

The pictures of the elves awakening with clothes on has always seemed rather silly to me, too.
LadyElleth's avatar
Heh - I'm glad I'm not alone. :) Aside from the silly logistics (Eru's big clothes factory in the sky? ;)), the Judeo-Christian origin story features two nude people right there smack dab in the middle of Eden, so I don't think this particular nod would raise a lot of eyebrows.

Tata and Tatië on the foreground, and Imin and Iminyë in the background, I presume? I think you made this scene so beautifully. :)

Thank you very much! I honestly did not think to assign names to these Elves, but your interpretation works quite well, thank you for sharing it. :)

This, of course, raises the question: Would the unbegotten have navels? ;)

OK OK I'm a nitpicker. (Also, I probably wouldn't haven noticed if I hadn't pondered that question over the Cuiviénen pic I made for Dawn.) Beyond that issue, this is another lovely piece. I fully support the notion of self-sufficient stargazing elf-women!
LadyElleth's avatar
Nitpicker or not, I did wonder the exact same thing when cloning away the lady's navel piercing. :D I'll just go with the idea that they did, symbolical children and all that. And probably being less confused about that nub in their babies' bellies once they got down to reproducing. ;)

And thank you. ^^
Qitian's avatar
Well, if they get down to reproducing, they'll also get down to birthing (one hopes), so they'll kind of see the umbilical cord and the resulting nub: I see no reason for confusion. I mean, they see where they got that. XD

But you can always say Eru lowered the Unbegotten down to earth by their umbilical cords or something. (Ah, mental images...) :D
LadyElleth's avatar
Good points all! Though the image of the Unbegotten dangling from the sky by their umbilical cords, now that's somewhere between the Matrix, a creepy master puppeteer and just plain painful. XD
Qitian's avatar
Yes, it's certainly Monty Python material at the least! :D

very nice, but i always imagined this scene for them to be lying on grass rather than rocks. the rocky shore gives a feeling of coldness - but it is a nice effect
