Buterflies A'Flutter

I am thrilled with how this mask came out. I worked on this for several days as all the details in the tooling and painting took quite some time.

Oh my gosh, I absolutely LOVE this mask! All those lines must have taken you forever to carve, I dont have that much patience. The paint job is beautiful and I like how the eye holes are just natural spaced between butterflies. It really gives the illusion of being covered in butterflies.

Thank you. I don't know if I will be making a lot of these as you are right about the time required for this one! I debated a lot about the eye hole. It was easier to just cut oval holes but I liked the idea of natural spacing. The ends of the tails on this butterfly would normaly have a nub about 3/4 an in long. When I left the ends on in the eye hole I realized that was really annoying to have in front of the eye so I did cut those off. (You can see how the bottoms of the butterflies are finished on the bottom of the mask verses the two whose bottoms edge the tops of the eye holes.) Even though the eye holes are irregular it is very easy to see through.

Yes it fits like a glove. I am going to do a picture either on a manaquin head or on my head sometime today after I get some elastic to string it. My boyfriend pointed out that it is so abstract that it is a bit hard to invision when youi look at the mask alone but looks awsome on the face.

It took a lot of hours of work to make, then I had a horrible moment at the end. I bought a can of matte sealer of the same brand I buy the clear gloss sealer in. I gave it a spray all over and when I took it into the light I realized the matte sealer left a fine sheen of silver all over the black. It ruined the sharp color contrast. I was practicaly sick seeing my paint job ruined when I was in the finishing stage. In a last ditch effort to save it I put a layer of the gloss over it. Much to my delight the gloss darkened the prior layer and brought back almost all of the color in the mask. That evil can of sealer is going into the trash!
