Short Background (for lazy people):

"The Dollmaker" is a men named Harold Whitemen, who has it´s own atelier where he crafts unique and realistic dolls.
He had a hard childhood, since he lost his mum when he was a child and his father became an violent alcoholic. When he was a teenager, his younger sister got murdered.
The murderer was unclear and his father disappeared. He never got over his sisters dead and once (he was already 35), he met a voodoo lady on one of his trips who was able to bring his sisters soul back into one of his crafted dolls. From then they decided to haunt for violent parents and "rescue" their children from them by eliminating them.
They found out that the voodoo spell also gave his "sister" the ability to use dolls to hurt/bring death to people she has seen for at least one time. For that she needs to imagine the person and do harm to a doll which looks like her target (which her brother crafts for her). One of her eyes has a small cam integretated, so her brother can see what she sees.
So they judge about the people/parents she sees and he is able to craft a copy of the person. Once his doll sister met "Hedwig" which was the start of bad decisions and hurting/killing the unguilty people. Hardwig founds out the truth about his sisters death and fathers disappearing. He also begins to question himself his actions and if it was better to destroy his sister.

Detailed Background (Beware of bad English - reading on own risc):

A plain men named Harold Whitemen has finally realized his dream to open his own atelier.
It was his dream since he was a child to create beautiful and realistic looking dolls with his own hands.
His childhood wasn´t as filled with love as it should have been and Harold and his sister Cassandra (short "Cassy") had to fear their violent father.
Everytime when their father came from work he went to the pub and came back home - fully drunken and ready to vent his anger on his children.
Once they were a happy and cheerful family of two loving birds and their son. But when his mother became pregnant with Cassandra, there were complications which caused her inner injuries. She loss a lot of blood and so it came that she wasn´t able to survive the birth.

Harold´s father lost the love of his life and had to care about two children by his own. He still tried his best, but some years ago he lost his good paid job caused of job cuts.
They had to move from their house, which was full of beautiful memories. It was the first house of the loving pair and there his son made his first steps.
One deep hit followed the other and so it came that the already broken men got a hard but bad paid job and a horrible boss and had to live with his 2 children in a small and uncomfortable flat. He wasn´t able to handle a job, caring for his children and house while still feeling empty about his loss. So over those years, the once caring and cheerful men turned into a broken human wreck. He tried to drown his anger and sadness in alcohol. His addiction let him become a violent person who forgot about the needs and suffer of his own children while concentrating on his own fall.

So it became more often that the siblings were hiding in a wardrobe or loft, when their father came home. His hate especially went to Cassandra, who was (in his eyes) fault for her mother´s death and the cause of every following tragedy. Cassandra had a bad leg, because she got hurt when the doctors tried to get her out while her births complications.
So she had to walk with a limp and made it more difficult to run away when her father was about hitting her. Ever since his younger sister were there, Harold tried to make her smile and protect her. He crafted little toys with any materials he could find. No matter if fabrics, wood or scraps. One day he was searching for new materials, he found a pretty porcelaine doll in a small box in his fathers wardrobe.
Harold took the doll and brought it to his sister. He has never seen her smiling so happily. Cassandra named her "Dolly" and it became her best friend.
She was playing everyday with the doll, until one day their father angrily searched for the kids, shouting out loudly "What the hell is wrong with you little monsters?! Where are you hiding her?!" The siblings didn´t expect him to be this aggressive before he even went to work or get the chance to get drunken. They weren´t fats enough to hide so their father catched them.
He saw the doll in his daughters arms and his face went red out of anger. He grabbed the doll and slapped the girls face. "How you dare to touch your mothers doll?! Wasn´t it enough to you to curse this family? Go out my face!"
He went out the room to clean the doll and search for a new hiding place. The doll was very important to him, because he bought it once for his wife when their were having their honeymoon in Paris and her wife fell in love with her face when they saw her in a small antique shop.
Since then his wife treasured the doll until her very last day.

Harold tried to make his sister stop crying. He hold her tied in his arms and promised: "Do not cry, Cassy. The tears are only covering your beatiful face. One day I will craft you a doll, as pretty as you. You will see!"
The girl answered with a shaking voice: "But I want Dolly! She´s the only thing relating to our mother. I want to feel close with her.."
The boy knew that it was wrong to search for the doll and bring it back to his sister. So he concentrated on his promise. He started to help out deliver paper when he came from school to save some money to buy books and materials to help him to learn crafting dolls.
Once a new atelier opened, very close to his school way. There an old men were crafting dolls and so it came that young Harold asked to help out and learning from the talented crafter.
Harolds passion became bigger and he began to spent more and more time with crafting and helping in the atelier. He didn´t realize that he let his sister more often alone at home, though she was the reason for all his hard work.
Harold was already 16 and his sister 13 when he finally created a doll, worthy to be gifted to his sister. The lucky boy went home, when realizing the open front door of their house.
He silently walked in and faced bloody footprints on the floor, which looked if someone was fleeing after a horrible happening. He ran up the stairs to search for his sister. Suddenly his face turned pale. His mothers doll was laying in Cassy´s and his room - broken and full of blood.
He stood there paralyzed with horrible thoughts in his mind: "This can´t be true..Cassy must have found the doll and got catched by their father when he was drunken..Is she.."
The house was filled with silence and there was no sign of any living being there. Then, a small piece of fabric looked out the wardrobe. It looked like his sisters skirt.
With shaking hands, Harold opened the wardrobe and there, the lifeless body of his sister fall into his arms. The boy couldn´t believe this was truly real. He cried and screamed louder than he ever did.
His heart broke for a second time in his life and this time he knew it was his fault. He promised to protect her, to make her happy. In the end he left her alone.
Finally he was about making his promise real when it was too late. He carried the girls cold body and lay it on the bed. The rigor mortis wasn´t there yet, so he lay his crafted doll on her chest and put her arms around it.
She looked like a sleeping angel, just like his mother when being prepared for the funeral. Noone would ever think about the terrible pain both angels must have been suffered from when facing death. Since that horrible day, noone has ever seen the children fathers again.

After moving to his aunt and uncle in another city, he finally experienced care and love again. How he wished that for his sister.. The years passed and until his finaly day of therapy, there was no sign for the young men not to be "cured" from his trauma.
He lived a normal life, was never being recognizes a lot. He was just "there". Noone anyone would ever talk about. But that was exactly what he imagined it to be.
As long as noone takes attention and when remembering his face only thinking about the plain men, being polite but nothing special, noone would ever disturb his "studies".
In opposite to what helooks outside, inside he was still filed with hatred and plans for revenge. Although he had common jobs, he still crafted in his freetime.
One day he got a call that the old men he once helped with his atelier has diceased. He has no children and his brother had no interestd in his works. So it was his will that his atelier will be handed off to Harold.
Harold never forget about this warm hearted men who once was like a father or grandfather to him. He canseled his job and moved back to his childhoods city to reopen the atelier.
His dolls were selling better than expected and soon everyone knew about the "Dolly´s" and their most pretty and realistic looking dolls. While noone were wasting a thought about the simple men, sitting in the atelier being more than a seller but also the artist behind those unique creations.
When crafting, the thin men always has his love for his sister in mind. He was working on his biggest project ever. He wanted to build a doll, which exactly looked like her sibling, even her size. He spent his earnings to buy the most realistic feeling materials for her skin and hairs he could find and so it came that he once created a masterpiece of work, easily be mistaked for a real 13 years old child.
When facing his life project, tears were covering his face. For a moment he relived the tragig moment when he once had to face his dead sisters body.
He touched the doll head and whispered "Cassy..Do not be sad. Everything will be good, I promise."

Harold set on his mind to reverse his failures and bring his sister back to life. Together they will protect children from their parents!
Some years passed and Harold finally found from his few travels, an old voodoo lady in Africa. It was hard to find her cause everyone feared her and noone knew if the stories about her were real or or only rumors to make children fear to walk too far away from home.
The women promised to help him to breath life into his doll. But he needed to bring her the ashes of the person he loss. She didn´t want anything in reward.
"You trust me and show no fear like anyone else, shall be my payment.", the old women laughed. When he came back to visit the voodoo lady again, with his sisters ashes treasured in a small case, the strange lady wanted him to wait outside her wooden house. Half an hour passed and the desperated men got a bit scared and nervous when listening to the spells he sensed. It sounded if many different voices came from one person and he got a cold and warm feeling over his body.
When she was done, the lady called him back and gave him a small box in return. "You shall not open the box until you are standing in front of your doll or the spell will go into another body. Also remember, once the spell has reached it´s target, it can´t be reversed."

On the one hand it could have been a trick and she wanted to fool him to get the ashes, in the other hand he wouldn´t want to risk his only chance of success be wasted.
He was nervous on his whole flight back. When he arrived back home, his heart beated faster and faster the nearer he came to the doll. "It´s about time to awake, my dear Cassy..", he nervously mumbled. His hands opened the box when just in the moment he sensed that creepy voices and mixed feeling again, while a dusty fog of red ashes flow into the puppets mouth.
Right after the whole dust disappeared in the dolls body, it´s body were moving if there was a heart beating in it´s chest and it was trying to breath for the first time.
"C-Cassy..is it.. really you..?" The doll opened her eyes and asked: "Brother..? Oh brother, I´ve missed you!" The stunned but happy men tightly hugged his creation.
She really seemed to be his sister or at least have her memories. The last thing she remembered were how she came to death by a hit on her back head.

Together they wanted to find out what happened that faithful day and where to find their father to take revenge.
He came up with a new identity "the doll maker" to protect all children who´s parents caused them any suffer, which the help of his "sister".
Their found out that "Cassy" had special voodoo powers. When she is thinking of a person she saw at least one time, she can make him suffer.
For that she needs dolls that look like her target and everything she is doing to them are really happening to the person they are representating.
They came up with the idea to put a small cam in one of Cassy´s eyes, so Harold can see what she sees and so can craft the dolls she needs.
There´s no sound, so he trusts on the judgement of his "sister" who to bring to death.

(I want to keep things short here now, since it seems if I was about to write a roman otherwise. :D)

The twist should be that it wasn´t her own but her fathers blood on her body. Noone ever told the boy, cause they wanted him to forget about the horrible day and it still wasn´t sure if the father killed her or someone else.
In fact there was a theft who broke in their house and got surprised by the drunken father when hitting the girl. It came to a fight and the theft cutted the drunken men with a knife.
The father put his child in the wardrobe, when the theft turned away, thinking she was still alive. So came his blood on the child´s clothes. He tried to attack him by ramming the theft, which was a fatal failure.
He got even more nervous and attacked the father with the knife many times until he was dead. Somehow the theft managed to (maybe he had help?) make the corpse disappear, but totally forgot about the child. He only wanted to escape as fast as he could.
When Harold get to know the truth and also found out that the voodoo lady used the heart of a child to make her spell work, he was getting doubts about what he did.
Did he really always knew the truth? May he did failures and took revenge to parents ho didn´t actually do what he thought? Did he create a monster which was more the voodoo spell than his sister?

Once, Cassy met Kevin Wendell Crumb´s personality "Hedwig" and they became friends.
The lines between what is good and what is evil are melting the more often they are together and talking about their plan, since Cassy also meets his other personalities.
Cassy makes a lot of wrong decisions she thought were the right ones and she makes her position clear, even if it means to betray her "brother", who get doubts about it was wrong what they did. A lot of unguilty people loss their lifes for it.
He stopped making dolls for her and one day he had to decide to kill his own "sister".
