Flag of the British Dominion of Andaman-Nicobar

Flag of the British Dominion of Andaman and Nicobar islands, also known as Andaman-Nicobar. It was created in 1947 for the Anglo-Indian and Anglo-Burmese population. However, many of the Anglo-Indians and Anglo-Burmese chose to return to Britain or emigrated to Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

The obvious failure of Anglo-Indian emigration [today only 24% of the population is Anglo-Indian, either pure European or mixed descent] led for Britain to try a daring solution: as the Roma-Gypsy population in the Second World War suffered persecution similar to the Jews, a similar solution must also be in place for the Romany people. All in all, British authorities encouraged poor British Romany people to emigrate to Andaman-Nicobar, touted as paradise. While the majority responded coolly, 10,000 Romany people from Britain emigrated to Andaman-Nicobar, with the support by the Royal Navy, between 1950 to 1955. Immigration was low at a while, until the Andaman-Nicobar government allowed people from the Indian subcontinent to settle the Islands. Some of the incidents are quite ugly; riots between the native Sentinelese people and the Indian and Romany immigrants in 1967 caused 34 deaths on both sides. In the 1990s, new influx of Romany immigrants from Eastern Europe have caused new tensions between the settled down Romany, the Anglo-Indian, and the Indian immigrants.

By 2013, the Romanies, both the so-called pioneers and the latecomers, numbered 33% of the population, with the Indian immigrants a close second.
