Skater

I just finished this one. It had been so long since I painted a human, I just wanted to try. I found a reference photo on pixabay (hey, if anyone knows of more with a traditional or victorian feel like this, can you point me in that direction?) and it struck enough of a cord with me, I decided to try it alla prima.

8x10, oil on canvas, alla prima (in one sitting, approximately 8 hours)

And let's face it, that's kind of where I have been with 2020. Alla Prima. It's like I'm having focus issues facing anything more than that,  but I can deal with the idea of a painting in one sitting. If it's garbage, I'll know in one day, not two weeks in and feel like I lost so much time. If it's decent, yay for a day well spent!

Given that I haven't painted much this year at all (Thanks 2020) and a human hasn't been a subject for a long time, I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised with this one. Sure, I need a LOT more development... but I think it is good for what it was; a foray back into figures, after frankly not having nailed much about them in the first place. I feel like I have potentially opened the door to doing better with figures, so I plan on working on more and I am resigned to the fact that I will probably be trashing a lot of my attempts.

I think I may be on to something with the alla prima. Maybe that's my way of connecting with the human figure more successfully. I'm going to back-shift and try some dead layer paintings and glazing, just to see (that's what I basically did before)... but maybe this is where it's at for my brain. It's all about always learning. Even if I feel like I master something someday, I'll still be learning more and trying to do better. So, best I get started, then!
