Walkthrough - The Cathedral

This is a Walkthrough for my image The Cathedral which can be found at my Art Account.

Please note: this is a walkthrough - it's not meant to teach you how to reproduce the image. It's meant to show you how I work, which techniques I use, what my thinking process was and ultimately how I arrived at the end result. I want to help you use Photoshop to make your visions come to life, not to hold your hand while you do nothing but repeat the steps. I hope you can appreciate and respect the difference!

However I've recently come to the conclusion that trying to copy some aspects or the mood of a piece is not always to be condemned. This basically means that if you want to try and recreate it, you're welcome to. Don't expect me to help you out when you get stuck though, because I believe that the merit in trying to copy something is to gain insights into techniques that can later be used to create something new and unique. Giving you step-by-step instructions would negate that pretty much completely. So, if you recreate it, give credit where credit is due.
:bulletblue: In any case, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me see what you've created - I'm curious like that.
:bulletblue: Comments & Feedback always welcome

I enjoyed reading through this. I'm thinking of trying it if I can get the stock images. Thanks for sharing.

I'm glad you like it, though I have to point out one thing: this is not meant to be a step by step so you can recreate the same image, it's meant to teach techniques that you can use for your own ideas. I thought I had mentioned this in the intro.

Yeah, you did. I have to start doing some of my own images. I'm so used to doing step by step tutorials.

fantastic, how do you blend everything so well?
kuschelirmel-stock's avatar
thank you - it's mostly practice I guess and some technical stuff like using masks and adjustment layers, most is explained in my tutorials (or I try to explain anyway ^^;)

can i ask how did u do the rays of light at the back?
kuschelirmel-stock's avatar
sure.

put some random blobs of paint on a new layer, then use the Motion Blur Filter (filters > motion blur) to blur them at an angle. put on a blend mode like overlay or colour dodge (you may need to experiment with those as well as the colour of the paint) and you're good to go :aww: you can change the colour of the rays afterwards using the hue/saturation dialogue (Ctrl+U) which is usually easier than trying to pick the right colour from the start
