Photomanip related Contests and Events

Animal Spirit Guide Contest happening now!
The Animal Spirit Guide contest!!! It is running now, October 15 to November 30, 2018.

This must be a new work, created for this contest, so if you have one in the works that your unbridled muse is flying with, wait to submit it until the contest starts. Make sure you are a member of this :iconcrphotomanipulation: group, head into the gallery and look for the advanced, intermediate or beginner folders and enter your wonderful works there.
Requirement: This challenge is about the relationship between a person and their spirit guide and how that relationship is expressed is a very important part of this challenge. Just putting two beings together doesn't qualify and it must show a/the person with their personal animal spirit guide in a relationship with each other the best way you can and how you feel inspired to.
I realize that many may already know, while others have no idea what an Animal Spi

Photomanip Series Feature

I've stumbled accross some amazing photomanipulation series in the last couple of weeks, and since my previous journal is incredibly old already I felt like it would be a good time to give a shout-out to those passionate artists, who are brave enough to tackle such a thing. From my own experience I know it can be pretty tough to complete a series of images, which are all visually and conceptually connected but still unique in their own way. This is especially true in the photomanip genre, where we're often reliant on a pool of photos and therefore limited in following the visual guidelines we set for ourselves. I last attempted to create a series in 2015, but the images ended up more distinct in terms of technique and style than I would have liked. At least I managed to finish the series, though. :XD:
Of course this list is not meant to be complete! What photomanip-series did you enjoy that I didn't mention here? Let me know in the comments.

Adventurer: In search of lost creatures - Contest
Welcome to The-Imaginarium Photomanipulation competition. This journal describes the rules for the contest. Please read it carefully.
Our theme, Adventurer: In search of lost creatures, is a great theme for you to create your own adventure, there are several creatures that have not yet been discovered, so what are you waiting to start a great adventure? and be the first to discover a creature never seen before.
At your entry you should show an adventurer and a creature, use your creativity and impress everyone.
Bullet Blue As always our Big contests, the competitors' entries are divided by levels, such as Advanced and Intermediate/Beginner. In this way everyone can participate and have a fair chance to win.

judging will now commence.
There are very few entries, and a lot of points to be won. ;)
Have you ever just closed your eyes and allowed your imagination to fully consume you?
What would the world be like if you did this for a split second, and opened your eyes to
find that all of your imagination had leaked out into reality? Would inanimate objects suddenly
be just as alive as humans? Would humans be inanimate objects? Would natural roles be reversed,
where we looked up into the ocean, and walked across the sky?
What would happen if there was more to the sights we see every day, than just what we were
seeing with our eyes? Could you imagine what it would be like to find a bustling metropolis
thriving, trading, socializing and growing just beneath the roots of your favorite flowers? What
if all along, we (humanity as we perceive it) were never truly alone...what if everything we have ever

Hi, everyone!
So, it's time for another photomanip contest! :eager:
The theme of this one is the zodiac. It is one often used; however, rather than just focusing on the star zodiac (Aries, Capricorn, Aquarius, etc.), I thought it would be interesting to incorporate other types of zodiacs. I have found pages that give information on some of the more well-known ones (however, you are welcome to dig as deep as you'd like and go further than the ones shown below):
Astrological zodiac:
Celtic Tree:
Egyptian zodiac:
You are welcome to incorporate more than one zodiac into your entry (in fact, you're encouraged to!).

January Challenge and December Winner!
January Theme: New Beginning
How are you guys in the New Year? I hope you've had a great time this New Year's Eve and are looking forward to new challenges and surprises! Everything is beginning once more; did you make any resolutions? And at last, this brings me to this month's theme - New Beginning!
What can you portray? Let's think about it - is a beginning of a new season? Is a brave hero beginning an adventure? Is a wanderer setting off on the road to the unknown? Is a child being born? Or maybe someone is being raised from the dead? Or dying? Is someone in the process of creating a new, wonderful world?
As you can see, there is really a myriad of ways to interpret January's theme - be creative! Surprise us with your vision, open a new and wondrous chapter and have fun while creating the potential winner of this months challenge. :)

Eleven.. Cover Contest! CLOSED!

So, for as long as I can remember I've had access to the most incredible range of books, from novels, tall tales and everything in between; all of those I've read (and I'm sure you all agree) it's most frequently their covers you immediately think of when you hear their titles.  It goes without saying that a picture tells a thousands words, and cover art, for that specific reason has to grab the reader by the eyeballs and hold their attention right through to the very last page in a yummy, captivating smorgasbord of plot teasers, incredible characters and dreamy (or dystopian) landscapes. Essentially, book cover p0rn :D
Visiting bookshops used to be as much about the cover art as it was about the text on the pages, which is why these days seeing the dozens of dreary, completely plain covers which do absolutely NOTHING to sell the book leaves me a little cold.  Further I just can't understand why publishers are going in this direction.
:iconelandria:Elandria 111 176
When you ask about book covers don't
I have a lot of inquires about using stock for book covers as well as other commercial works. Inquiries come from a number of different sources including: publishing companies, designers, and sometimes from the authors themselves. Here is some of the things I have noticed about a lot of these messages that are more damaging then helpful, and un professional. Please understand that this isn't about anyone in general nor do I feel anyone is being rude or disrespectful purposefully. I thought it would be helpful for the people inquiring and for other stock artists on DA.

One of the biggest things I see is asking if the price listed is correct, and then giving a much lower number that you have paid for other stock.
-If I or any other stock provider has set a price it's because that is the price they feel comfortable offering. It's     usually lower then they should offer, and telling them inadvertently it's too high is deva

CLOSED - Photomanipulation Contest - Mythology
UPDATE: Hi, everyone. Sorry for the silence. Things have been hectic this past week. I was hoping to have the winners announced by now, but I haven't had a lot of time online, and I won't have more until the middle of next week. The announcement will not be any later than next Wednesday, that I can promise.

Based on the results of a previous poll, the popular choice for the contest theme is Mythology.
"Mythology can refer either to the collected myths of a group of people—their body of stories which they tell to explain nature, history, and customs—or to the study of such myths. As a collection of such stories, mythology is an important feature of every culture."
For this contest, you are invited to create an entry based around your favorite god, goddess, mythological creature, etc. However, you are encouraged to break out of the box a bit and work around a myth you are not familiar with, or one that i

REMINDER - New Contest: Hell's Belles
What is this?
This is a brief contest, meaning that you will have only one month to complete it. It is a personal contest, meaning I'm doing this on my own, and it's not the huge project/contest to which I alluded in an earlier post. That's still coming.
This contest will run from March 7th to April 6th, 2015. It is something I've wanted to do for a while to meet new people and to get people involved in the community.
Who can enter?
I will only accept photomanipulations, digital mixed media work, and digital paintings/drawings. These are the only media I feel comfortable judging. I apologize to those of you who do not use these media.
The theme of this contest is Hell's Belles. The theme is indeed a pun on "hells bells," so you can rock out to AC/DC's iconic song as you contemplate your entry. (See above.)
By "Hell's Belles," I am referring to women who roc

Contest: Depth and Perspective! - Closed
Last update: 4/24/22 - DATE EXTENDED to the 1st of May do to the request of multiple people.
In this contest your goal is to create a photo manipulation, or mixed media piece that focuses on creating an interesting depth of field and perspective!
That is your main goal! Pieces will be judged on overall concept and technique, but the use of depth and perspective will be that main focus! Meaning adding a few blurred out branches in the foreground might not cut it!

Some things we should talk about
This journal is here to highlight, debug and bust some myths for you all of stuff that goes on ALL the time, and is in part spurred by some recent events that leave me somewhat baffled and perplexed over some of the behavior we've been recently seeing across the DA communities, particularly Stock & Resources, and Photomanip since we work so closely together (and its apparently time I wrote a new wall of text to you all.)
Every community has them.  Those constant "issues" that make people angry and frustrated. Sometimes they can be easily solved with a little effort, and other times something just snaps and causes reactions that are far and away over the top.  Here are some of our top faves.
Its time for everyone to take a nice soothing deep breath, its a long one!
There will be a test at the end. :stare:
OMG WHY DID YOU SEND YOUR REPLY TO PirateLotus-Stock and CelticStrm-Stock AS WELL??
Hello, welcome to TEAM Stock and Resources!

Photomanip Weekend
Photoshop has a great arsenal of tools that let you work non-destructively. Let's take a look at three of the most important options.

1. Layer & Vector Masks

Have you ever cut something out using the eraser only to find out later (when your undos are no longer available) that you cut too much? Use Layer and Vector Masks instead of the eraser!

  • A Layer Mask (Layer > Layer Mask > Add Layer Mask) is a raster mask that can go from white through grey to black: anything you paint black will become invisible, anything white is visible and all greys are degrees of opacity. You can use any brush to paint on it or you can use a gradient to get soft transitions. In addition, you can add a layer mask from an existing selection. Layer Masks can be refined using a special tool, too (double click on the mask thumbnail) to help you refine or soften edges.

Layer Masks by kuschelirmel

  • A Vector Mask (Layer > Vector Mask > Add Vector Mask) is the vector equivalent to a layer mask. On it, you use vector paths to mask out what should be visible or invisible. You can create vector masks from existing paths, too.

Vector Masks by kuschelirmel

2. Smart Objects

This is a great thing if you like to keep total control at all times (and don't mind the large file sizes of the resulting psd). Basically, a Smart Object is a psd file within your actual psd. For example, you can create one from a number of layers (or groups of layers) and they will then behave as if they were one object. To create one, go to Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object. To access its content you need to double-click on the layer's thumbnail in the layer's palette. Once inside, change what you like and save the file before exiting and the Object will update with your changes.

I use these for three main things:

  • Unlimited resizing & easy access: Before I place a model on the canvas, I cut it out very roughly and just mask out most of what I don't need with a simple layer mask (usually from a selection created with the quick mask tool). Then I create a Smart Object from it at full size. This way, I can scale it down and if I later find I need it bigger after all, I can scale it back up again without loss of quality. Also, I can start adding as many layers on top as I like. Once I know I will keep the model, I double click on the thumbnail to access the content. There I can cut it out precisely without any distractions on top (and at original size so I don't need a microscope to go around all the tiny details).

  • Smart transform / filter / adjust: If I need to make adjustments to the model (or any other smart object of course), for example pose her arms differently, I usually use the Puppet Warp Tool (Edit > Puppet Warp). It lets you put pins in all over the object so that when you move one of them, the rest will stay where it is. On any normal object, you need to undo this if you don't like the outcome, but on a Smart Object, you can access the puppet warp (or any other transformation, adjustment or filter applied) at any time you like and change it. To do so, simply double-click the transformation (or filter) in the layer's palette.

  • Update multiple instances at once: If I have something I know I want to have multiple times in my image, for example lamps in a tree, I duplicate the original Smart Object and distribute the items where I want them to be. Then if I need to make an adjustment to the lamp (finalize cutting it out, adding colour corrections, etc), I access any one of the smart objects, change it, save it and voilá, all of them will update along! You just need to be careful about what you put inside the smart object since once you have it in the smart object, all will blend with the blend mode "normal" in your main image. That means that the glow for the lamp (set to Hard Light for example) will only blend on the lamp and outside it will look like it's just a layer that does not blend properly, making the whole thing look seriously off. Therefore you need to do the glow on the main image and not inside the smart object!

Smart Objects by kuschelirmel

3. Adjustment Layers

Adjustments are the things like Hue/Saturation, Color Balance, Levels or Curves that have the power to give your image the finishing touches or help blend individual layers into your composition. Now if you have a Smart Object, you can go to Image > Adjustments > *adjustment of choice* and it will be added as a "smart adjustment" that you can access like the puppet warp or the filters described above at any time to tweak the look. But what if you want to affect all layers or at least all below a certain level? In that case, you can use an Adjustment Layer (Layer > New Adjustment Layer > *adjustment of choice*) to add it to your layers palette. It also has a Layer Mask already attached that you can get creative with! Of course, you can also add a Vector Mask in addition.

Non-destructive editing is one of the greatest assets in Photoshop, so if you can incorporate some of the above in your workflow I feel that you have made a big step toward better images - since non-destructive editing means having the power to tweak everything at will without having to use the undo function.

I hope this little article helps you in your creative endeavours and I would love to hear your thoughts on it:

  • Do you already use these features?
  • If so, what are your favourites and what do you use them for?
  • If not, what do you think will have the most impact on your work once you give the technique a try?
  • Are there any more non-destructive editing techniques not mentioned here that you frequently use and would like to share?
