I guess something went awfully wrong during hyenas' last hunt in the Pridelands, and this time it wasn't the Guard's fault...
Kion is for a not so nice surprise on his morning patrol.

-----------------------------------------------------

Context? Nope, I simply wanted to draw something more mature about TLG. One of my pet peeves is the lack of blood in cartoons for young audiences. When I was a kid, it freaked me out, and even now I hate it and it makes me unconfortable, not to mention it breaks the immersion.
This is even worse in TLK/G since well... the savanna is a violent world, if we're realistic, but as always, no blood...
Some scenes like that would make it even better in my opinion since you'd be more on edge.

Oh well, rant aside, I can imagine something like that happening someday. Janja can be very careless when he hunts, and lots of animals in the Pridelands can be dangerous, even herbivores. One mistake can lead to dreadful consequences.
Kion can't be truly bothered by blood since he's a LION and well, obviously he eats raw meat, but seeing someone he knows badly hurt is another story, even if that person isn't one of your friends. And I don't think Kion and Janja really hate each other, even if they may think so. Their relationship isn't nearly as venomous and agressive as Kion's and Zira's, for example.

Hmm and also, no, I don't ship them at all. As stated, I simply think they don't truly hate each other.

Oh yeah, and mature tag because even if it isn't too bloody, it's still a bloody Disney pic, so better safe than sorry, right?

Sorry, could you clear your meaning a bit: were you disturbed by blood when you were a kid, or by the fact that there wasn't blood shown when clearly there should be?

Oh and yeah, a very late question ain't it? :V

Well that is almost going to get an R Rating. But that is so interesting!

Eh, this is a nice scene. Great colors and details, but I have to disagree with you on that bit about shows for younger audiences should show blood. You're talking about a show aimed at 5 year olds. Just because YOU aren't disturbed by blood, doesn't mean a lot of kids share that feeling. If I was aiming something at a very young audience, I would understand why they wouldn't put blood in them.

Even I as an adult, get squeamish rather easily when death is shown on a movie or a show. Not really an animated show or movie, though Felidae I regretted watching big time....but still, I'm sensitive to that even when I know it's fake. Some kids can take it, others can't and that's why they don't do blood in shows like this. If some kids get sensitive about it, parents complain and the show is taken off the air. We wouldn't have a show to continue on with.

Also the nature of how the characters fight in this, wouldn't make sense to even have much blood. They always are tackling or swatting at each other. Hard enough to make an impact, but not enough to show a scratch. A few times they could get away with some scratches but for the most part, it's like how Kovu's scar makes no sense. If it took a simple swipe to make an ever lasting scar like that, Kovu should be covered in them by the time he rescues Kiara.

All and all I don't mean to rant on. I just disagree that the show needs blood and you gotta remember. The main reason why they don't do something edgy like that is because parents will complain and kids can handle some things but all kids are different.  It's not them trying to be lazy. They wanna keep the show going and make money. They took a big risk showing that elephant's body in that one episode. That's big enough risk right there.

I agree that they don't truly hate each other.  They may be rivals, but it's still good that Kion has Janja in his life.

Yeah - I'd be very interested if they choose to go that way in the series. I mean, actually making it more obvious and maybe making them help each other and so on, at least from time to time. It would be really nice.
I think "Janja's new crew" was some kind of first attempt at that. While not truly helping each other, they were not ennemies in that episode.

That would be great.  Who has attacked Janja in this picture, by the way?  Was it Makuu?

Well, while it's left up to interpretation, what I had in mind while drawing was that he was too careless while attacking some kind of horned herbivore, like a buffalo or oryx or something, and the preys ended up fighting back to defend themselves.
I've seen that happen in real life documentaries, and usually the predator doesn't survive such injuries, as the preys are often big animals, and if they manage to land a hit with their horns, it's lethal. Now, in the case of this drawing, if Kion helps him and all, I don't see him die, but the injurie is still severe and alone he probably couldn't survive.

It's a great job. I say that if they were other circumstances, they could have been friends (as well as Kopa and Asante or Kion and Jasiri)

You're welcome.

I want to see that. Even though I prefer to be friends (for some reason I like to pair them up a bit)

Kions seems to care about every animal's well-being, even the old and worse enemies such like Janja.

Guard seemed to be even a bit worried about Janja's, Chungu's and Cheezi's well-being when the trio fell from the cliff after defeating Nne and Tano in episode Janja's New Crew.

It is a great drawing and scenario! I love the use of color!

But it's a show on Disney Junior. Not even traditional Disney has had gore in any of their animated franchises. The TLK films have never shown dripping blood either, and that had some pretty violent scenes in it! Disney Junior is mostly for toddlers, knowing this; they can't even show animals getting eaten whole (unless they're bugs). They won't ever draw blood for the same reason they don't put genitals on their characters, a bit too 'graphic' for no particularly beneficial reason.

Thank you!

And yeah, I know the reasons why they don't do that, that's not the problem. But it still bothers me :XD:
As I told in my description, it really bothered me when I was a kid. Basically, I could watch anything I wanted from when I was a little kid, so I knew veeery early about what is blood, injury, death and so on. Because of that, in my kid mind, I was thinking that if a character is hurt but they don't bleed, they must already be dead or not have been alive from the beginning, and so I was always scared by that.
Even if now I know the reasons and all, it still bothers me to no end.
The genitals thing doesn't bother me that way because it usually isn't relevant at all in a cartoon aimed at younger audiences. Rather than censorship (even though it is) it can be seen as a way to simplify the design - get rid of the elements that aren't neither pretty or useful to the overall design. The blood thing on the other hand really changes your perception of an injury. If a character gets injured and doesn't bleed, it means the injury isn't severe at all, and the scene will be a lot less intense and dramatic.
Anyway, again, I totally get why they censor the blood, but I hate it anyway :XD:
Now, I have to mention, in some regular Disney cartoons they actually show blood, for example in Tarzan, when he fight Sabor, the leopard scratches him at some point, and he actually bleeds. Or by the end of Tangled, Eugene actually bleeds when he gets stabbed. So it CAN happen, even in Disney, but not very often ^^

This picture is amazing! The characters expressions and just everything else! Great job! I am a dummy!
As you said, I agree, I don't think Kion and Janja completely hate each other. And I think Kion would help Janja if he was wounded, as shown here, or the other way.

I think your opinion of puting mature content in TLG is really great. The savannah is really dangerous.

I love TLK/G but it doesn't change the fact that it could very well have mature content.
